ALM Match Wrap: Jets prove too strong at HBF Park

Glory were unable to recover from a first-half blitz at HBF Park on Saturday evening, eventually going down 4-0 to Newcastle Jets.

The visitors made the best possible start when Thomas Aquilina took advantage of a defensive slip to fire home at the far post with just eight minutes on the clock.

And 1-0 became 2-0 midway through the opening period as Lachlan Bayliss curled a shot into the far corner from just inside the box.

Glory were then left with a veritable mountain to climb when Ben Gibson grabbed his first ever A-League goal five minutes later to make it 3-0.

A strong start to the second half was essential if the hosts were to force their way back into the contest, but instead they were dealt another huge blow almost immediately as Aquilina’s cross was forced in by Gibson.

The men in purple did manage to create some opportunities of their own as the second period wore on, the first of which fell to Adam Taggart who saw his shot parried away by Newcastle ‘keeper Ryan Scott.

And the home skipper went close again moments later, this time having another goalbound effort deflected wide by former Glory defender, Aleks Susnjar.

But Zdrilic’s men were ultimately unable to grab anything in the way of a late consolation as the visitors’ defence held firm to close out the victory.
