Powerball $100 million lotto jackpot jointly won by Queensland ...
A Queensland couple and a mystery ticketholder have become multi-millionaires after winning split shares in a $100 million Powerball lottery jackpot.
The two entries were the only division one-winning tickets drawn on Thursday among more than 3 million other prize-winning players.
The Lott, the corporation which organises and operates Australian lottery competitions, said the anonymous winning Queensland couple are grandparents from Rockhampton and first assumed a phone call they received to alert them of their prize would be from a telemarketer speaking about their home energy options.
"I'm in disbelief. I can't believe it. This doesn't happen to us. I expected you to ask if we have solar panels, not to tell us we've just won $50 million," the grandmother said over the phone, according to The Lott.
"We're multi-millionaires. I can't believe I'm saying that. It's going to take a while to wrap my head around it.
"I've been playing for a long time now — since the game first started. I had always used the same numbers, but this ticket was just a QuickPick.
"We've been pretty happy in life, but this is the icing on the cake."
The couple told The Lott they plan on spending some of their jackpot prize money on buying more Christmas presents for their family members.
The winning ticket was bought at the Card & Paper Shop in North Rockhampton, and store owner Janet Dingley said her staff plan on celebrating the win.
"It feels wonderful to know we've played a role in completely changing someone's life," Ms Dingley told The Lott.
"This is our 10th division one win ever … It's unreal to see our outlet on a bit of a winning streak.
"We'll be filling the store from floor to ceiling with balloons, and signage, while also spreading the wonderful news with our community far and wide."
Lottery organisers said they are hopeful an unregistered player from the Darebin local government area, in Melbourne's northern suburbs, comes forward to claim their half of the jackpot.
"We're encouraging all City of Darebin residents and visitors to check their entries because you may just discover you've won an exhilarating prize set to change the course of your future," Anna Hobdell, a spokesperson for The Lott, said in a statement.
What were the winning Powerball numbers? The seven winning numbers in Thursday's jackpot draw were 22, 10, 4, 31, 1, 26 and 9 with a Powerball number of 14.
The $100 million lottery was played on Thursday by more than half of Australians, meaning more than 10 million people had bought tickets to enter, The Lott told the ABC.
Division one prizes have been won by 404 players so far in the 2024 financial year, resulting in more than $758 million in prize money.
Of those, eight winners lived in New South Wales, six were from Victoria, three were in Queensland, and there was one winner each in South Australia and Western Australia.
