How to Transfer Saved Data From PS5 to PS5 Pro

The PlayStation 5 Pro has just launched, bringing with it a more powerful gaming experience, including the ability to run many games at a full 4k resolution and 60 frames per second at the same time. If this isn't your first PS5, you probably want to get all your installed games and save files off that old machine and onto your shiny new PS5 Pro. Here is a quick step-by-step guide on how to do that.

For my guide, I'll be transferring data from last year's PS5 Slim model to the new PS5 Pro. However, this method will work between any two PS5s, Pro or not. First make sure that both the old and new consoles are plugged in to power and turned on. You'll also want to make sure both of them are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

On the new Pro console, from the home screen, navigate to the settings menu (gear icon) in the top right corner. Scroll down to System and then select System Software, followed by Data Transfer. Begin going through the steps. The Pro will recommend connecting both consoles together with a wired LAN connection to speed things up, but you can go wirelessly if a cable or access to your router isn't available (just note that it will be a slower process).

The Pro will search for the other console, select it once it pops up. Continue following the steps until you're given a choice for which content you want to transfer. There are three sections: User Data, such as screenshots and save files, Games and Media, which is the biggest section since it has my installed games, and Console Settings.

The PlayStation will also give you an estimate off to the side for how long this process will take from this point. Since I was using a LAN wired connection, mine estimated just under 2 hours to transfer all three sections, which amounted to around 800 gigabytes of data. Give yourself plenty of time to complete the whole transfer process.

Finally, approve the last couple of pop-ups and begin the transfer. The Pro console will eventually put itself to sleep after the first progress bar. At this point you can leave it in sleep mode to do its thing. However, make sure to leave the older PlayStation turned on -- it can't be put into rest mode like the new one. When the process is done, the older console will also put itself to sleep.

You can still turn the Pro on to check the progress it's finished so far.

And that's all there is to it.
