Sony announces PS5 Pro with improved graphics and performance
After months of speculation and almost four years since the PS5 was launched, Sony have unveiled the Playstation 5 Pro overnight, bringing with it features including 8K gaming, Wi-Fi 7 and more.
Announced by Mark Cerny, lead architect for PS5 Pro during a technical presentation, the updated PS5 Pro console will bring a host of improvements to new and existing games as well as the PSVR2.
The Playstation 5 Pro will be similarly sized to the original, though slightly longer – and include a 2TB drive inside. The PS5 Pro will include an updated GPU, which will render up to 45% faster than the PS5, with Advanced Ray Tracing on-board and AI upscaling to provide a super sharp image, and more detail.
One feature, called Game Boost, which will help ‘stabilize or improve’ the performance of supported PS4 and PS5 games. Sony says that Game Boost can improve the perofrmance of more than 8,500 existing titles – which I’m looking forward to checking out.
Sony has also announced that games from Playstation Studios, as well as third-party developers will be including patches to take advantage of the PS5 Pro upgrades. Games confirmed to be receiving an update include Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Demon’s Souls, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, The Crew Motorfest, The First Descendant, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, and more.
A major hardware difference is that the PS5 Pro will launch without a disc-drive, much like the slim editions launched previously. Just like the PS5 Slim, you can add an external Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive or just use your digital library. You’ll also be able to replace the covers, and purchase that stand to keep your PS5 Pro vertical separately.
The console will launch on November 7th, with pre-orders going live on September 26th. Local pricing hasn’t been announced for the console, or disc-drive as yet, but global pricing for the PS5 Pro was shown during the presentation:
$699.99 USD £699.99 GBP €799.99 EUR ¥119,980 JPYIn terms of pricing locally, you’re looking at just over $1,050 AUD – but we’ll let you know when Sony Australia announces it officially.
