Trucking industry reminded to prioritise mental health on R U OK? Day

The heavy vehicle industry is being reminded to join in this year’s R U OK? Day today (September 12) and prioritise mental wellbeing.

NHVR CEO Sal Petroccitto said it was important for truck drivers and those in the heavy vehicle industry to check in with friends, loved ones and each other, particularly after long journeys on the road.

“For those working in and around trucks, there are certainly some unique challenges including tight deadlines, long hours, shift work and isolation,” Petroccitto said.

“These obstacles can unfortunately have an impact on mental wellbeing.

“Mental health is an important issue for our industry, and R U OK? Day reminds us to stay connected and reach out when in need.

“Every person in the heavy vehicle industry can find value in learning the signs of someone who isn’t behaving as they normally would, listening, and encouraging action.”

R U OK? Day recognises that anyone can ask the question, and a genuine chat can make a difference when someone is struggling.

“We can all play a role in looking out for one another and making mental wellbeing a normalised and prioritised part of the workplace,” Petroccitto said.

“Our commitment to mental health safety is also reflected in our mental health first aid training provided to NHVR officers.

“So far, we have trained approximately 60 on-roads officers in across Victoria and NSW, with more training planned for Queensland.

“This will take us to around 100 trained staff by the end of the year, and means our employees are empowered to understand, identify and support others who may be experiencing a mental health problem or crisis situation.”

The NHVR has also previously released regulatory advice providing guidance on mental health and wellbeing in the heavy vehicle industry, particularly relevant to employers.
