Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said that his team "didn't deserve to win" after it beat Real Sociedad away in La Liga on Saturday night.

The hosts hit the woodwork a number of times, yet two converted penalties from Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe were enough to take the points back to the Spanish capital via a 2-0 win.

Los Blancos also managed to reduce the advantage of bitter rivals FC Barcelona to a single point through their third victory of the season, ahead of a Catalan derby the latter will play against Girona on Sunday afternoon.

Post-match in Anoeta, Ancelotti paid some compliments to his men but also admitted that they "didn't deserve to win" a "complicated game" where La Real "pressed a lot".

"We endured and suffered, we had commitment. And I value that a lot, because commitment in a team with so much quality is not easy to find, [and] today we [had it].

Ancelotti isn't a fan of the way his side is getting the ball out from the back at present. As La Real relentlessly pressed, the Italian lamented that it "didn't always manage to find the free player".

Asked about the level of the team, Ancelotti was again honest when saying: "We're not 100%, it's normal, but the players are improving".

"We can talk about all the problems in the world with this match, but the important thing was to start well. We have to bear in mind that we are not 100%. It's normal, we don't have four midfielders. I value the work of those who have played a lot," he went on.

Above all, Ancelotti and his troops leave San Sebastian "very satisfied" though he finds "we have to be self-critical to improve".

"It's a great opportunity for us to assess what we didn't do well, but with three more points in the league," he concluded on this.

One bright point was Mbappe's performance, however, as he made it three goals in his last two outings.

"I see him fresher, more active. He is very dangerous and combines well with Vinicius and the forwards. He's getting a lot better. I liked his game a lot," Ancelotti said about his number 9.

With the first league game after the September international break done and dusted, Madrid now turns attention towards getting the defense of its Champions League title underway through a 2024/2025 debut against Stuttgart on Tuesday.
