"Resident Evil 4" Remake Scores Raves - Dark Horizons
CapcomJust as Capcom’s remake of “Resident Evil 2” had the highest aggregate score of any 2019 game release on Metacritic, it looks as though the upcoming “Resident Evil 4” could well do the same this year.
Praise for this new take on the game franchise’s most acclaimed entry is near universal with the title pulling in a 93/100 on PC and PS5 and a 91/100 on Xbox – easily putting it in Game of the Year contender territory.
It’s also the best numbers for the franchise in recent years. 2019’s RE2 remake snagged a tad lower 93/91/89, 2020’s RE3 remake sits at a decidedly lower 84/79/77, and 2021’s outright new game “Resident Evil Village” stands at 84/83/83.
It follows some very strong ground-up remakes of late like “Dead Space” (89/89/87) and “The Last of Us Part I” (88) along with the “Metroid Prime” and “The Witcher 3” remasters both sitting at 94/100 each.
Whilst the latter two are more straightforward remasters, this is a full-fledged remake in a new engine and so sits as the highest scoring ‘new’ game of 2023 thus far behind only the aforementioned “Dead Space” remake, “Hi-Fi Rush” (89) and “Hogwarts Legacy” (88).
The “Resident Evil 4” remake has also scored perfect 10/10s from nearly three dozen outlets including The Guardian, The Washington Post, Digital Spy, VG247, IGN, TheGamer, Push Square, Game Spot, GamesHub, VGC and more.
With the game’s release imminent, the obvious question becomes where does Capcom go next. The less well-regarded co-op-centric “Resident Evil 5” with its deeply questionable politics followed by the widely hated “Resident Evil 6”? Do they go back to the beginning with a second remake of the very first game? Will they try and bring Dreamcast’s “Resident Evil: Code Veronica” into the modern day?
A lot will depend upon the sales of the fourth game’s remake which will be released in stores next Friday.
