Manchester City’s coach, Pep Guardiola, expressed that he’s “very proud” of Spanish midfielder Rodrigo Hernández for winning the 2024 Ballon d'Or but didn’t comment on Real Madrid’s absence from last night’s ceremony in Paris.

“First and foremost, congratulations to him and all his family and friends. This is incredible news for him, for all of us at City, and for our fans. We’re extremely proud of him. This is a first,” said Guardiola. He added that the whole team is “thrilled to be part of this and share in it with him,” and he hopes the award gives Rodri “the energy to recover well” from his ACL and meniscus injury, which he sustained during the fifth Premier League matchday against Arsenal, so he can return strong next season.

However, Guardiola avoided commenting on Real Madrid’s decision to skip the Ballon d'Or ceremony in France: “I’ve got nothing to say. If they want to come, great; if they don’t, that’s fine too. We’re not here to judge. Other clubs make their own choices.” Regarding the new Ballon d'Or winner, Guardiola praised Rodri’s speech at the gala, where he spoke about his family, Manchester City, and Spanish football.

“Rodri’s speech was amazing; he talked about family, City, and especially Spanish football over the last decade. And I completely agree with him,” said Guardiola, the former Barcelona manager. He emphasized that Spanish football has had “incredible players and coaches, winning the World Cup and the Euros. This award is a first, and Rodri is proud—not just for himself, but for Spanish football.” Guardiola added that City’s squad is well aware they’ll be missing “the best player in the world” while Rodri recovers from his injury.
