"It was amazing to have some royalty and also some tennis royalty here," Murray said addressing the guests on centre court. "It's amazing to have Roger here supporting the event. The last time I was on this court and he was watching was during the Olympics and he was sat in Stan Wawrinka's box and supporting against me.

"So it was nice to see a couple of claps after some good shots. It was amazing, I hope you are doing well Roger, Mirka and your parents."

Federer was then asked if he approved of Murray's performance, which he greeted with a smile and "I do." Tennis fans went wild over the moment with Federer, Mirka and Middleton lauded over their appearance at Wimbledon together.

Federer also caused a stir when he touched Middleton's back during his greeting. When the two met in the Royal Box, Federer greeted his wife Mirka before addressing the princess.

Federer greeted her with a slight touch on the back, before stopping having realised this was not part of the protocol. A handshake is generally the most common greeting when addressing a royal. Federer stepped back as the pair shared a laugh.

The 21-time grand slam champion was also on hand to watch Elena Rybakina defeat American Shelby Rogers. Rybakina admitted after the match she was nervous playing in front of tennis royalty.

"Maybe that's why I was nervous because actually I really like Roger. When I was younger, I was always watching him play," Rybakina explained after the match about her scratchy start. "First matches, I think they're always tough I would say, like, mentally to get to the rhythm of the tournament. So hopefully the next match is going to be easier."
