Robbo admits Roosters were 'as bad as' he's seen... but reveals why ...

The Roosters dropped a seventh game from their past nine and sit 14th on the ladder, but coach Trent Robinson says he has faith his side can make a late run into the top eight.

Robinson was immediately asked by Fox League’s James Hooper in the Roosters post-match press conference about how difficult the 30-16 loss to Melbourne makes their task to play finals footy.

“I’m not thinking about finals, I’m thinking about the game we just played,” Robinson shot back.

“I have belief in what we can do but we have to back up game after game after game. We have to get many in a row. That’s the truth and I think many can see that.

“But it’s not much use planning your seventh one (win) when you’ve got to get your first one.

The Roosters were in the contest for much of the match, trailing 6-4 until the 52nd minute. But three Storm tries in ten minutes curtailed the Roosters’ winning hopes.

Robinson lamented that “poor period”, labelling it “disappointing.”

“We were in a really good tussle there at 6-4 at halftime… We sort of ended up winning the field position for the first 10 minutes (of the second half) but couldn’t take our opportunities,” Robinson said.

“It was from that 52-53 minute mark it sort of swung, they sort of ended up having some sixes again, penalties and that and then there was three tries in ten minutes.

“That was really disappointing in a really poor period as I feel like we’ve been fighting a lot, and really good in second halves so that was really disappointing.

“We were sitting on four points for a long time, couldn’t take our opportunities when they presented in the first half and then the second and then the game was gone.

“Really disappointed to go to 30-4 down there.”

The Roosters attack has been heavily panned this season, and again, the lack of creativity came to the fore against the Storm.

Robinson said there are some positive aspects but revealed what he believed was the obvious issue that can’t get them out of first gear with ball in hand.

“We aren’t having individuals creates things on their own. We got to have a lot of guys combine to have our moments this year,” Robinson said.

“It’s a lot of combination play that many guys are having to come up with, which is good, you got to do that but then you got to come up with some moments around that.

“The ends of sets were really poor. The ends of sets were as bad as I’ve seen tonight.

“Runs on last tackle down short side, kicks five metres short than they should be, just the ends of sets there is no pressure applied.

“There’s no tries being scored, there is just nothing coming off those plays. I think they count for 28-30% of tries come off that and we aren’t applying pressure on them either.”

The tightness of the competition means the Roosters still have a pulse this season despite the poor past couple of months. As it stands, they are only two wins outside of the eight with seven games to play.

Robinson’s men will attempt to get their season back on track when they travel to the Gold Coast and take on the Titans in Round 21.
