Sunday Social: July 9

It is time for Planet Rugby’s Sunday Social, your quirky recap of the serious and not so serious talking points from the past week’s action.

The first Springboks Test of the year did not disappoint thanks to a packed-out Loftus Versfeld that did everything they could to be the 16th man for South Africa. The crowd and the team certainly brought the ‘gees’ in the host’s 41-12 win over the Wallabies.

50 000 fans hold up their signs to form the South African flag before two planes fly over Loftus ????????✈️

Lovely insight into the Springboks’ team culture as they sing their pre-match song in a Bok-branded pickup truck. Only a braai could make it more South African. No surprise to see Frans Malherbe at the wheel of the ‘bakkie’.

It could only happen in a Hilux. Watch and learn the Bokke pre-game chant with Damian, Frans, Canan and @SiyaKolisi, then tweet your rendition of the chant with #HiluxLegends and you could win Springbok gear or a Hilux experience. #ToyotaXSpringboks.

This is rubbing salt in the wound personified! A South African journalist had Wallabies coach Eddie Jones fuming after asking if he was happy it was not South Africa’s ‘A’ team. A harsh question and one that Jones took the wrong way. A tough day made even more tough for the veteran coach.

Talented All Black Rieko Ioane added another try to his growing tally. He is now one short of the All Blacks’ all-time record in the Rugby Championship and four short of Springbok Bryan Habana for the overall record. A casual reminder that the All Black is ONLY 26 years old. We are witnessing a legacy growing.

Rieko Ioane moves into equal 3rd place for the most tries in @SanzarTRC history.

This score will have the Barrett parents bursting with pride as Jordie and Beauden wreak havoc from their own 22. This one would have been played out as young kids in the garden for years and years, now it’s a wholesome try.

Absolute gold! England’s Luke Cowan-Dickie teased his move to Sale Sharks after his transfer to the Top 14 failed. Love the caption!

The teaser was so worth it as the hooker is seen in various parts of the club’s facilities casually nailing his pie and a pint! Top effort Sale! An announcement video for the ages.

It is easy to see how much he has loved this process. Cowan-Dickie confirmed the transfer on his own account by cracking a beer!

Is that a full-size rugby ball? Basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal carries the ball out in Major League Rugby which looks absolutely tiny next to his massive frame! Makes one think how the monstrous man would have done in a rugby union forward pack.

Scarlets with a Wimbledon and Ashes crossover for their pre-season training! Not sure who has enjoyed that more, the boss Dwayne Peel or the players. Pretty soft hands for such big lads to be fair!
