Ryan Gosling Goes Tie-Less Once Again at Oscars in Custom Gucci

11 Mar 2024

Ahead of performing “I’m Just Ken” during the Oscars 2024 telecast, Barbie actor Ryan Gosling walked the red carpet on movie’s biggest night wearing a custom black Gucci suit with silver detailing.

Gosling is a best supporting actor nominee at the 2024 Oscars for Barbie, while the blockbuster film’s “I’m Just Ken” is nominated for best original song.

His custom Gucci single-breasted suit is in black and features metallic beaded hand-embroidered trim. The actor, who walked the carpet with his sister Mandi Gosling, paired it with a black shirt which has silver piping.

Gosling chose to wear the shirt unbuttoned at the top, opting to go without a tie, let alone a classic bow-tie. (See all the star-studded Oscars red carpet 2024 arrivals.) His grooming was overseen by Lucy Halperin.

Gosling’s Oscars 2024 outfit is consistent with looks that Gosling has rocked throughout awards season. For the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, BAFTAs, Directors Guild Awards and Critics Choice, he’s worn a Gucci suit, often custom and donned without a tie, usually with the top buttons of his shirt open. He looks dressy — the tailoring is impeccable — but not too formal.

For awards season, he’s also worn TAG Heuer Carrera watches throughout — the actor is one of the faces of the brand — as well as a pendant necklace by Rock Star Couture, which posted in January about working with Gosling to create the custom piece. It’s not clear what the symbolism of the necklace is, but the jewelry brand’s Instagram post read: “Creating sentimental jewelry is so meaningful and lasts a lifetime! Give the gift that means so much to your heart. Ryan’s piece will always connect him to his heart wherever his job takes him. It was a pleasure creating this pendant for him.”

Gosling appears to be wearing a different pendant necklace for this red carpet outing. For the Oscars, he’s also wearing TAG Heuer’s Carrera Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde timepiece featuring white gold indexes and set with white lab-grown diamonds.

Almost a year ago at CinemaCon — months before Barbie would rocket to become the highest-grossing movie of 2023 — Gosling talked about taking on the role of Ken.

“I have to be honest: I only knew Ken from afar before now. I didn’t know Ken from within. I doubted my Kenergy,” he said. “I didn’t see it, but Margot and Greta conjured this out of me somehow. One day I was bleaching my hair, shaving my legs and wearing bespoke pink outfits, and rollerblading down Venice Beach.”

For nearly a decade, Gosling has worked with stylist Mark Avery, who was also his costumer on Barbie. Just ahead of the Oscars, Avery told the publication Wide Open Country that working with Gucci on custom looks for the actor has been a “dream come true.”

Avery added that the design process with Gucci and Gosling is not as elaborate as some may imagine. “Some [clients] prefer a fitting with a lot of people in it, a lot of opinions. But Ryan has such a strong vision for what he wants that it’s really just he and I and the label. I think people have this vision of, like, a room with 20 assistants and five tailors and it’s all very glamorous. But, really, it’s that old saying: ‘You put on the pants one leg at a time.’ I don’t think it’s really that different from the way people would pick out a suit at a store.”
