Colombian singer Shakira has reached a settlement with Spanish tax authorities to avoid a trial over charges she failed to pay 14.5 million euros ($24.18 million) in income tax between 2012 and 2014.Key points:Shakira will pay a fine of more than 7.3 million euros in place of serving jail time More than 100 witnesses were set to take the stand at the trial which was called offThe case hinged on where Shakira was living during 2012 and 2014
As part of the deal, which puts an end to the trial, the prosecution substituted jail time for a fine of half of the amount owed, more than 7.3 million euros, the judge said at a hearing on Monday.
Under the deal, Shakira is to receive a suspended three-year sentence and a multi-million-euro fine.
The trial, which would have included more than 100 witnesses over the following weeks, was instead called off after just eight minutes.
"Do you recognise the facts and conform with the new penalties that have been requested?" asked Judge Jose Manuel del Amo Sanchez.
"Yes," Shakira responded, acknowledging the six counts of failing to pay the Spanish government.
Wearing a pink suit, matched with a pink handbag and sunglasses, she arrived minutes before 10am local time accompanied by her lawyers, amid a media frenzy.
On Thursday night, Shakira won two Latin Grammy awards in Seville.
Previously, the Hips Don't Lie singer, who also has a second tax fraud investigation pending with Spanish authorities, had vowed to fight what she called false accusations.

Prior to the agreement, the prosecutor's officer was seeking an eight-year prison term and to claim back the taxes it says she owed.
Shakira says she had paid what the tax office said was owed before it filed a lawsuit, and insists she was not living in Spain during the period as her work led to a "nomadic life".
She was alleged to have spent more than half of each of the years in question in Spain and was therefore ordinarily resident in the country.
Tax officials also say that a Barcelona property she bought in May 2012 served as a family home.
Shakira, 46, lived with former Barcelona and Spain soccer star Gerard Pique for 11 years and the couple have two children.
The singer, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll, moved to Miami after their separation.
