The Emmys are split between the Creative Arts Emmys, full of smaller awards from technical ones to Guest Actors, and the main showcase. The Creative Arts were last night and the Primetime Emmys are next week. But already we are seeing Shogun absolutely dominate, and it won 14(!) Creative Arts Emmys in a single night, indicating a likely sweep to follow.

Again, these are not the main awards, but Shogun is nominated in almost every major category there. The Emmys that it has already won are now:

Best Sound Mixing Best Sound Editing Best Period Costumes Best Production Design Best Main Title Design Best Special Visual Effects Best Period/Fantasy Makeup Best Prosthetic Makeup Best Stunt Performance Best Casting for a Drama Best Period/Fantasy Hairstyling Best Guest Actor in a Drama (Néstor Carbonell) Best Picture Editing Best Cinematography

These 14 wins already beat out Game of Thrones’ old 2019 record where it won 12 Creative Arts Emmys, the most in a single year for a drama. There are 11 more categories that Shogun is nominated for, and if it wins them all, it will beat out Thrones’ 2019 22 total Emmys which were awarded for its (extremely controversial) final season, which seemed more like lifetime achievement awards than things that should have won for that year in particular, much of the time. Shogun, meanwhile, is just in its first season. It was only supposed to run for only one season, but because it was such a big hit, now it will return for more.

If there is one category that all Shogun viewers are the most invested in, that would be Anna Sawai winning Best Actress for her role as Mariko. Her competition in the category is Imelda Staunton in The Crown, Maya Erksine in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Reese Witherspoon in The Morning Show, Jennifer Aniston in The Morning Show and Carrie Coon in The Gilded Age. The only name in that list that could be any real threat is Staunton, given that this is the final season of The Crown, but this is Sawai’s only season of Shogun and she will not return. I have no idea how The Morning Show is still getting all these nominations with how good the overall TV landscape is and how many other stellar performances from actresses there are. Sorry Reese and Jen.

We will find out if Shogun can sweep next week and beat Game of Thrones. Or maybe tie. But it’s off to a great start.
