They can both be pets but ideally, shouldn’t be kept together. Cats and snakes don’t get along and if they have to face off, one will surely attack and likely kill the other. The video at the bottom of the page demonstrates how quick and fierce a cat is when faced with a large, slithering predator.

How Do Cats Respond to Snakes?

You’ve probably seen videos of cats jumping up to the high heavens after spotting a cucumber placed sneakily behind them by their owners. Cats often jump, especially in the presence of anything they don’t recognize. Their instinct when facing a predator is to create distance right away. If forced to confront a threat, cats use their defenses, which include their sharp claws, their sharp teeth, quick bites, and acrobatic agility. Like most animal species, cats are fiercely protective when it comes to their kittens, as you’ll see in the video at the bottom of the page.

Are Cats Prey to Snakes?

When it comes to cats and snakes, it goes both ways. Cats do kill and eat snakes if they can overpower them but if a snake is larger, it has the upper hand. It’s worse if the snake is venomous, as it can quickly kill with a single bite. Even if domesticated, cats are predators. If they’re not hunting your ankles, they’re looking to sneak up and ambush their prey. Snakes are predators as well, and when they encounter one another, it gets tense.

Python vs. Cat

Pythons can grow incredibly large and long, sometimes making it up to 33 feet in length. The sheer size of these reptiles is enough to deter other animals, even if they have predatory instincts. When the video below starts, a large green python is writhing on the ground toward a cat in full defense mode. Its ears are pinned back, its pupils are dilated, and when the snake gets too close, it swats at it, using its claws.

The moment it makes contact with the snake, the snake responds with what seems like an exaggerated expression, its jaw opening wide. The snake settles down for a few moments but they’re staring at each other, waiting for the other to move. The snake moves in to strike and the cat is quick with its furious paws, unleashing a repeated attack, causing the python to retreat.
