ALW: Ten-women Jets shoot down Sydney FC in thriller
The Newcastle Jets have produced a phenomenal backs-against-the-wall victory to reignite its A-League Women’s (ALW) season.
Down to 10 players following the red-carding of keeper Danielle Krzyzaniak in the 12th minute, Ryan Campbell’s outfit scored two late goals to knock over Sydney FC 2-1 at Allianz Stadium on Saturday night.
Moments of brilliance from Lauren Allan and new Matilda Tash Prior in the final 10 minutes set up the triumph at the expense of the reigning champions.
But, everyone deserved credit for the team’s fighting spirit.
All statistics pointed to a Sydney win, with the hosts enjoying 54% possession, 26 to nine shots on goal, seven to five strikes on target and, of course, a one-woman advantage in steamy conditions.
However, Newcastle’s tireless stars rose to the occasion, lifting the Jets into the top six on eight points.
The visitors were forced to play one player down for more than an hour after Krzyzaniak was sent off, for the second time in 2024/25, for fouling Princess Ibini outside the box.
Josie Allan was the unlucky Jet who had to make way for back-up goalie Tiahna Robertson.
Then, with Sydney launching raid upon raid on the Newcastle defence, Indiana Dos Santos scored 10 minutes later after intercepting the keeper’s pass to defender Lorena Baumann.
Robertson made up for that error almost immediately with a brilliant close-range save.
It wasn’t until the second half that Deven Jackson defied the numerical disadvantage to lock things up at 1-all.
Allan, who came on in the 70th minute, then scored in the dying seconds of injury time to pull off a stunning 2-1 result.
Meanwhile, Brisbane’s match against Central Coast was abandoned due to heavy rainfall at Perry Park.
The Australian Professional Leagues will determine a rescheduled date for the Roar-Mariners fixture in the coming week.
Originally scheduled for a 6pm (AEDT) start, the showdown was postponed twice after water began to pool on the pitch.
