More Tasmanian heritage properties will be able to be restored and revitalised through a second round of grants.

The next round of the Tasmanian Government’s Built Heritage Grants Scheme opened for applications on 2 September 2024.

Minister for the Arts, Madeleine Ogilvie, said a total of $1.3 million will be available to support owners and custodians of heritage-listed places to undertake restoration and activation activities.

"This funding is in addition to the $1.1 million already distributed to 31 recipients across the state during the first round of the grants. Owners of heritage listed properties can apply for small grants ($5,000 to $20,000) to preserve, repair or restore their properties where the heritage significance might be at risk," said Minister Ogilvie.

"Larger grants ($20,000 to $200,000) are available to support heritage owners, skills development organisations, as well as community groups to activate heritage properties and engage community support for Tasmania’s built heritage."

As part of the larger grants, applications are invited for projects that:

repurpose and activate underutilised buildings with an emphasis on driving visitor demand;support not-for-profit owners to undertake significant heritage conservation for buildings that are publicly accessible;support the growth and capacity development of the heritage skills trade sector, andsupport events, projects and interpretation initiatives that provide opportunities for the community to engage with heritage sites.

"The first round of grants proved popular among Tasmanian heritage property owners and the second round of grants is expected to be no exception," said Minister Ogilvie.

"An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is to continue to build on Tasmania’s reputation as a world leading heritage and tourism destination, highlight Tasmania’s unique experiences, and ensure that the visitor economy continues to have a positive impact on Tasmania’s environment, economy, and way of life.

"These grants form part of the Government’s $4.5 million investment over three years to support this heritage sector and revitalise Tasmania’s unique heritage properties."
