Joe Biden 'full of joy' after Harris loss: Ted Cruz
President Joe Biden is delighted that Vice President Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump, according to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
The incumbent withdrew his bid for re-election on July 21, amid reported pressures from senior Democrats following his weak debate performance against Trump. The manner in which many believe he was "pushed out" has now been touted as a contributing factor in Harris's defeat, sparking mockery from conservatives who say Biden is now indulging in the post-election regrets of his own party.
"We're going to wrap up by pointing out the one man in America on the Democrat side who is not sad, and who is actually full of joy," Cruz said during the most recent episode of his Verdict podcast. "I'm not going to tell you his name, but it rhymes with Boe Jiden."
His co-host, Ben Ferguson, added: "I've never seen a bigger grin on – and we'll change his name – ever, even on days he thought [were] the best day of his life."
Newsweek has contacted the White House for a response to Cruz's comments.
The latter comment was in reference to Biden's Thursday speech at the White House Rose Garden, where the president assured the nation of a "peaceful transfer of power" following Trump's inauguration on January 20.
"Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory," Biden said. "And I assured him that I would direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition."
While his speech was somber in tone, acknowledging the "hurt" that those in his administration were likely feeling, many remarked on the president exhibiting a relatively upbeat demeanor, and smiling several times while addressing the nation.
Conservative pundit Ben Shapiro posted a picture of the president grinning to X, formerly known as Twitter, captioning it with: "Joe Biden is the happiest man in America today."
"I genuinely believe he voted for Trump," another user wrote. "Payback for being pushed aside."
Cruz went on to mock the reactions of the "corporate media" following Harris' loss, saying that he was experiencing "schadenfreude" – a German word, meaning satisfaction at the suffering of others – as a result.
"It's not a pretty sentiment, but I've got to say, watching these hardcore leftists just scream out in agony that the voters voted – and voted in a way they didn't like – it truly is [schadenfreude]."
"Joe Biden understands schadenfreude as well," he later added.
Some Democrats have shared in the belief that the swift nomination of Harris, without a primary process, along with Biden staying in the race until July, contributed to her eventual defeat.
Famed political strategist James Carville on Thursday said that this was one of the things which created "sense of dishonor" among the American electorate.
"By Biden staying in so late, we didn't have any process. We had all of this unused [talent] sitting on the sideline," Carville said. "If we'd had some kind of an open process, it would have been much better. It could have been worse, but it could have been much better."
