The Block is officially back for another season in 2023 and if the first episode is anything to go by, we're in for a drama-filled show.

The premiere episode welcomed audiences to Darling Street and introduced the five new teams competing as well as the five houses up for renovation this season.

From Victoria, we have sisters Eliza and Liberty who have no previous building experience. Married couple Leah and Ash from Queensland who share three kids will also be competing in the 2023 season. South Australia's team are married couple Kristy and Brett, as are Kyle and Leslie from Western Australia who have two kids. Architect Steph and her childhood sweetheart-turned-husband Gian from New South Wales will also be competing.

House Decider Challenge

The debut episode of the season saw the five couples compete in a house decider challenge to decide which house they will get for the remainder of the season.

The challenge saw the teams given 48 hours and a budget of $5000 to create a kid's room based on a Disney+ character.

It came as no surprise Leah and Ash were awarded the first win of the season and given the first opportunity to chose their house for the competition.

Leah and Ash

Leah and Ash were given one of the more unusual Disney+-themed items - a National Geographic puzzle. The Queensland couple spent $4992 on their build which included custom-built bunkbeads that looked like a castle.

The pair nailed the brief and were awarded a score of 27 out of 30.

Eliza and Liberty

Eliza and Liberty surprised everyone, including themselves, when they achieved second place in the first competition of the season. For a team that had never renovated before, the judges applauded their well-executed "Groot" themed room.

The sisters were given a score of 18.5 out of 30.

Kristy and Brett

Kristy and Brett's Frozen-themed room came in close third, just half a point behind Eliza and Liberty. Whilst the judges applauded their creativity, they believed the South Australian team could have gone further.

The pair scored 18 out of 30.

Whilst the team hit the brief and completed a room, their styling wasn't a hit with the judges - especially the Lego left on the floor. Unfoutantly, their Grogu-themed room needed the extra styling which resulted in them coming fourth in the competition.

The team received a score of 17.5 out of 30

Steph and Gian

The New South Wales team missed the mark when it came to their Toy Story room, of which they presented a muted colour palette and adult furniture for a kid to grow into.

The judges agreed the couple missed the bride and didn't deliver a room for kids, which saw them receive the lowest score of the competition - 14 out of 30.
