When will The Last Of Us season 2 come out and who will be ...

13 Mar 2023

After nearly nine weeks of tense and traumatic drama, season one of The Last of Us has reached its climax.

It's no shock that the internet's reactions to the finale were nothing short of entertaining.

Based on the immensely popular video game of the same name, all eyes are on HBO and showrunners to learn the fate of our protagonists Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal).

Here's what's happening with season 2 and how the internet reacted to that ending.

Disclaimer: Spoilers ahead!

Is there going to be a second season of The Last Of Us?

Yes!

The show was renewed for a second season after only a few episodes had aired back in January.

"I'm humbled, honoured and frankly overwhelmed that so many people have tuned in and connected with our retelling of Joel and Ellie's journey," said executive producer Neil Druckmann.

"The collaboration with [showrunner] Craig Mazin, our incredible cast and crew, and HBO exceeded my already high expectations. Now we have the absolute pleasure of being able to do it again with season two!"

What can we expect from season 2?

For those who don't know, The Last Of Us video game has a sequel – The Last Of Us 2 – that showrunners will be leaning on heavily for the second season of the show.

Released in 2020, The Last Of Us 2 is set five years after the events of the original and introduces the new character of Abby, who then joins Ellie on another adventure.

Not laboured with a world to introduce, the season two narrative is reportedly much more expansive and could possibly be split into two seasons according to co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin.

"It's a big animal to take apart, you know? Because it's a much bigger story and it's a more complicated story. It's a beautiful story," Mazin told IGN.

"It's more than a season's worth of television, for sure."

When will season 2 come out?

Considering the first season just finished, we'll be waiting at least a year before we get more Joel and Ellie time.

Although, Pedro Pascal did let slip during an interview with Collider that shooting for season two may be starting in 2023.

Fingers crossed.

There's been no official confirmation from the two leading stars.

But considering both characters are in The Last Of Us 2, there's a very high probability.

Mazin also ruled out any recasts despite the five-year jump between seasons.

"There's a little bit of interesting flexibility. Wonderful things that makeup can do," he told Collider.

"We don't get too wrapped up in that stuff. As long as people are absorbed by the story, I think there's some flexibility there."

Okay, so…

Just kidding. You'll need to wait until season 2 to find out.

Or play the game.

What are people saying about the season one finale?

Boggle, giraffes and betrayal.

That's about as much as we'll say at this point.

But while we wait for people to watch the episode, we'll indulge you in some of the internet's best reactions to the finale.

This was us 10 minutes into the episode:

This was us when it ended:

Neil Druckmann, co-president of The Last of Us video game developer Naughty Dog, also had some deep insights to add:

Now let's get into THAT scene — you know the one.

It was our bad, Joel.

He caught us slippin'.

Oh, you saw Joel become capable of monstrous cruelty?

No, you didn't.

That giraffe scene though.

We need a spin-off show just about what the heck these gentle giants had been doing here all along.

And with that, we bid you farewell until season 2.

Let's see whether Joel and Ellie actually finish what they started.
