Live updates: Rabbitohs vs Roosters

Just nowFri 6 Sep 2024 at 11:09am

45' Bit of push and shove

Joey Manu is involved after he made a break down the right sideline.

His pass inside went forward off the deck, but there was a Souths player who slid in late on the Roosters player on the ground which sparked the little melee.

Tyrone Munro put a really late shot on Mark Nawaqanitawase, all shoulder too, after released Manu, and that's the penalty that we're going back for.

41' We're back underway at the Olympic stadium

It's been a bit ... limp? so far tonight.

This is the NRL's most brutal rivalry.

You'd expect a bit more fire in the coming 40 minutes as Easts kick off.

Some really bad news coming out of the spoon bowl for the Eels.

Dylan Brown has suffered a suspected ACL injury in the massive victory.

That's what Eels coach Trent Barrett told reporters in the press conference at Campbelltown.

Despite the win and avoidance of the wooden spoon, that would be a horrible way for the Eels to end the year if it is confirmed.

Roosters with a bit of work to do

I've followed Eastern Suburbs, aka the Roosters, now for some 48 years. Don't ruin my night, Simon. Please ! Blog me a win to give me a wry smile.

Half time: Sloppy Roosters edging battling Bunnies

They've not been clinical, as you might expect given how many injuries they had to deal with last week, but they are leading the Rabbitohs at half time in this one.

The game has not been a thrill-a-minute, but new boy Mark Nawaqanitawase certainly provided one, leaping high to take a screamer of a catch that led to his first NRL try on debut.

The Roosters will want to tighten things up considerably in the second half, but so far so good for the tricolours against their bitter rivals.

37' More brilliance from the Roosters to the left!

It hasn't happened nearly often enough for the Roosters in this match, but when they've got their passing working on the left, it's resulted in tries.

Fetalaiga Pauga it was who finished the move, once again putting the foot down and racing to the corner, beating everyone to dotting the ball down following some slick ball movement.

Another sideline conversion for Sua'ali'i, and a groan as he kicks it tells the story as he misses to the near side of the posts.

34' Cody Walker weaves his magic!

That's really nice from Cody Walker and Souths.

A simple shift to the left for the Rabbitohs, a step off the left foot, a dab off the right and he scoots over under the posts.

That was effortless for the veteran five eighth.

Prop Naufahu Whyte was the guilty party in terms of leaving the gap open, and Trent Robinson hs yanked him off the pitch immediately to stop that hole opening up again.

29' Fetalaiga Pauga speeds over in the corner

Well that was as slick as the Roosters have looked all night.

Luke Keary does really well, floating a pass above the threat of Joey Manu that had drawn the Souths defenders inside to deal with.

Fetalaiga Pauga got the pass, put the ball under his arm and just flew towards the corner, where he dotted down.

The kick is missed and it's 10-4.

24' Jye Gray scores for the Rabbitohs!
(Getty Images)

It's been coming.

The Rabbitohs have had plenty of possession and the Roosters have been sloppy. And now it's told.

The ball was shifted to the left side, Cody Walker delayed, delayed delayed the pass to Gray, who shimmied a dummy just enough to make Nawaqanitawase slip and he goes over.

The kick is not good.

The score is 6-4.

15' Angus Crichton on report

Oh, Angus Crichton has run hard at the Rabbitohs line but used his forearm as a battering ram to the throat of Davvy Moale.

He's on report and that's a concern for the Roosters as well.

12' Nawaqanitawase brings the skill

Oh that is lovely from Nawaqanitawase.

He gathers the ball one-handed, gets up to full pace in the space of a stride or two, and then flings a pin-point pass inside as he's tackled into touch as the Roosters get out of danger.

It's only a little thing, but Nawaqanitawase is showing off his skills early on the NRL stage, which nobody who has ever seen him play union or 7s would have been surprised about.

11' Burgess smashed!

Sitili Tupouniua SMASHES Tom Burgess!

Happy NRL retirement says the Tongan international to the British Lion!

What a hit, Burgess was sent backwards.

7' Mark Nawaqanitawase!
(Getty Images)

Oh there you go! What a try! What a try from the former Wallaby!

Mark Nawaqanitawase rose highest in the corner, it was almost Israel Folau-like, so high was he!

A perfect kick from Luke Keary it has to be said. But that's an amazing leap.

He loved that, the fans loved that.

Incredible.

What a 12 months he's had. From the Rugby World Cup, to the Olympics, to the NRL finals.

5' Could Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i be in trouble!

Oh Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i has smashed Jye Gray!

That looked very Reece Walsh in Origin I to me...

But no, he got down so low and Gray slipped a lot.

I think he'll be OK.

Nevertheless, that was not great...

4' Another error from Spencer Leniu!

He tried to offload this time and messes it up.

Not ideal from him.

1h agoFri 6 Sep 2024 at 10:08am

2' Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i looks in pain

The injury curse that hit the Roosters like a tonne of bricks last Sunday has swung back and hit them again early on here, it looks like.

Joseph-Aukuso Sua'ali'i has hurt his left shoulder and is getting a bit of treatment.

And he can't use that arm.

What a concern for the Roosters, who will have already lost a lot of sleep over their mounting injury list...

Which you can read more about here.

1h agoFri 6 Sep 2024 at 10:05am

2' Error from Easts!

Oh that's not a great start.

Spencer Leniu is hammered by a fearsome tackle and drops the ball.

Souths with an early chance.

Guard of honour for the latest Immortal
(Getty Images)

The latest Australian rugby league Immortal Ron Coote is given a guard of honour at the new Sydney Football Stadium.

It is fitting, he was a legend at both clubs.

He played 148 games for South Sydney between 1964–71.

Then added 109 games for Eastern Suburbs between 1972–78.

Both skippers, James Tedesco and Cody Walker, stand and have their photo taken.
