Mendoza has arrived in supreme shape

The May-England fight, scheduled for 10 rounds, has just begun.

We got to watch Brian Mendoza do a quick open workout on Thursday night and he put on a show for those who were doing their late-night shopping at the local Pacific Fair. He is a beautiful mover, has great balance and will come at Tszyu from all angles.

He is also absolutely ripped.

Two-time welterweight world champion Shawn Porter, in Australia to commentate on the fight, was in awe after seeing Mendoza’s physique at the weigh-in.

“Who saw Brian Mendoza’s muscles?” Porter said. He had some muscles and Tim didn’t or not as many, you know.

“I thought this was 60-40 for Tim. I think it’s 55-45 for Tim. I think this is gonna be a tough one.”

Gone fishing?

About 45 minutes after knocking out his previous opponent, Carlos Ocampo, in the first round, images of Tim Tszyu fishing were posted in his Instagram account.

It was a pointer to just how little energy he expended in flooring his opponent. So will Tszyu be casting a line in the water later today?

“100 per cent after the fight,” Tszyu said. “That’s what I’m saying, nothing changes. I’m gonna keep doing the same old shit that I always do.”

I’m tipping Mendoza, who is genuinely world class, will make Tszyu work considerably harder than Ocampo, who lasted only 77 seconds.

Perhaps Mendoza is the big fish he hopes to hook?

“We’ll see. It could be the smallest one,” Tszyu said. “You never know.”

And the winner is ...

Tim Tszyu has just entered the building. As he begins his final preparations, we go to the judges scorecards for the result of Dargan-Amelia.

And all three judges have given it to Dargan with identical scorecards of 77-75.

“I’ve worked so hard,” Dargan said.

“This means everything to me, it’s the start of a new journey and I want to go all the way to the top.

“We both knew this was going to be a war and being on this platform, we knew we had to put on a show.”

Only two more fights to go until Tszyu steps into the ring. The next bout is the super-featherweight clash between Nathaniel May and Jackson Jon England.

Mendoza’s remarkable journey revealed

Brian Mendoza has been a pleasure to deal with during fight week.

The American hasn’t received a great deal of media attention during his career to date and has been happy to oblige with any requests.

Turns out he has an incredible story to tell. He talks about his family’s incredible journey to the Gold Coast, via Guantanamo Bay.

Plenty of action already

We’re currently in the opening rounds of the super-bantamweight bout between Shanell Dargan and Amber Amelia.

We have already witnessed an absolute barn-burner if a fight; Hassan Hamdan extended his unbeaten streak with a unanimous points decision over Danver Cuschieri. We also saw the world’s tallest active heavyweight, Julius Long, get knocked out by Toese Vousiutu.

Here’s some of the action from Hamdan’s win ...

Who is Brian Mendoza?

Talk about Sliding Doors moments.

I was in Minneapolis the day Tim Tszyu became the first Australian to headline a non-world title fight in the United States. Tszyu had to climb off the canvas after being floored in the opening round by Terrell Gausha, a dramatic way to make his American debut.

As I was interviewing Tszyu after the fight at the Armoury - the venue used to shoot Prince’s music video “1999” - another fight was taking place. By that time, almost all the punters had gone home and the cleaners were packing up the chairs as the fighters were trading punches.

I remember seeing the winner landing the mother of all uppercuts to win the fight in a spectacular stoppage

Turns out the bloke who threw it was Brian Mendoza. Here is a man who, only last year, who having played second fiddle to Tim Tszyu, is now challenging the Australian for his world title.

“I always had the belief that I would be here,” Mendoza said.

“It was all just a matter of when everything would really fall into place, when the universe and all the stars really aligned.”

Howdy partners!

A very warm welcome to you from the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, where Tim Tszyu will make the first defence of his WBO super-welterweight world title.

The Australian is up against Brian Mendoza, the unheralded American who has captured the attention of the boxing world with consecutive knockout wins against former unified WBA and IBF light middleweight champion Jeison Rosario and the previously unbeaten Sebastian Fundora to take the WBC Interim super-welterweight belt.

This will be the last time Tszyu fights in Australia before fulfilling his ambition of taking big-money fights in Las Vegas.

It’s a stacked card and we’ll be giving you a blow-by-blow account of all of the action from ringside. So sit back, relax and enjoy all the action!
