Tom Barrass has officially joined the brown and gold after Hawthorn reached a deal with West Coast on the final day of the 2024 Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period.

The Hawks sent across a future first-round pick, a future second-round pick and a future third-round pick to the Eagles while securing the 29-year-old premiership player and West Coast's future fourth-round pick in the deal.

A former club best and fairest winner, Barrass is among the most reliable key defenders in the AFL, having notched up 150 games for the Eagles since being drafted in 2013.

This year, the 197 cm agile tall was ranked elite in intercept possessions (7.7 per game), spoils (7.2 per game), intercept marks (3.6 per game) and contested marks (1.5 per game).

Hawthorn National List and Recruiting Manager Mark McKenzie said the club was excited to welcome Barrass to the brown and gold.

“Tom is clearly a player of high talent and character who we know will play a key role in our defensive unit in 2025 and beyond,” McKenzie said.

“He has not only shown how well he can shut down dangerous opposition forwards but also how well he can intercept and set up crucial passages of play.”

“As one of the premier defenders in the league, we are excited to have Tom in the brown and gold in 2025.”

Barrass joins fellow defender Josh Battle in joining Hawthorn during the player movement period, with Battle arriving as an unrestricted free agent earlier this month.
