Richie Stanaway was the first man out on the Mount Panorama Circuit and held the top spot until the reigning Supercars champion tore up the track.

Posting the fastest lap of 2.05.511, Kostecki edged out Cam Waters by 0.1310 seconds and Broc Feeney by 0.3499 seconds.

The achievement marks his second consecutive pole position at the Great Race — the first driver since Garth Tander in 2009 to go back-to-back.

"That is as good as you'll ever see," Mark Skaife told Fox Sports' coverage of Kostecki's hot lap.

Fellow commentator Neil Crompton added: "Brodie has lifted the bar big time".

Speaking afterwards, Kostecki revealed he was battling a vibration issue which had him seeing double in the closing stages of the lap.

"Chattering my teeth on Conrod Straight there," he said.

"It was actually a bit hard of a lap, to be honest. I had really bad tyre vibrations so it was really hard coming into Conrod.

"I was starting to get double vision from the vibrations so I was just glad to pull up.

"Stellar work by the whole crew and stoked to get this pole for them."

Kostecki also admitted that he was hampered by illness in the lead-up to the shootout.

The 26-year-old will depart Erebus Motorsport at the end of the season following a well-publicised spat with the team.

There was drama with R&J Batteries Racing's Andre Heimgartner going wide on Turn 1 to mar his hot lap before it had even begun.

Competing in his first Bathurst 1000 shootout, Heimgartner locked up on the opening turn before skidding onto the gravel and slapping the wall.

Heimgartner was encouraged to push on with his lap in case any of his rivals succumbed to a mistake but ultimately placed 10th.

On Friday, Penrite Racing's Matt Payne clinched provisional pole position after topping qualifying with a blistering lap of 2:05.6452.

Payne was unable to reproduce his chart-topping heroics from qualifying — grazing the wall to set the seventh-fastest time of the shootout.

The 161-lap race gets underway at 11.30am AEDT on Sunday.
