Australian Torrie Lewis upset Sha’Carri Richardson in the women's 200m at the Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday (20 April).

Reigning 100m world champion Richardson ran a relay leg in Florida at the end of March but this was her first individual race of Olympic year.

Despite running a strong bend, Richardson was behind Anavia Battle for most of the race but moved ahead inside the closing 20 metres.

However, out in lane nine, 19-year-old Lewis finished fastest of all to take the win in 22.96 with Richardson second ahead of her USA World Championship sprint relay team-mate Tamara Clark and Battle in fourth place. Just six-hundredths of a second separated the top four.

Richardson thought she had won and was adjusting her hair for the cameras as she waited for the result of the photo finish which went the way of Australian 100m record holder Lewis.

The American star is due to race again over 200m next weekend as the Diamond League stays in the People's Republic of China for the Shanghai/Suzhou meet.

The first four from Xiamen are entered for next Saturday with world champion Shericka Jackson missing as she continues to delay the start of her season ahead of Paris 2024.
