A chance to wind down after a long NRL season hasn’t gone exactly according to plan for Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson.

The 47-year-old, who guided the club to a premiership in his maiden campaign as mentor in 2013, and wife Sandra were airlifted to John Hunter Hospital following a gas bottle explosion in the Upper Hunter earlier this week.

It’s understood the Robinsons had been cooking dinner at a property near Denman, which is owned by legendary administrator and former player John Quayle, when the incident occurred.

The couple suffered burns to their arms and were doused in cold water immediately.

However, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended the scene.

“About 9.30pm on Monday 7 October (the night after the NRL grand final), we were tasked by NSW Ambulance to a gas barbecue explosion at Dalswinton,” a WRHS spokesperson said.

“A woman and a man, both in their 40s, were treated by paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team for burns before being transported to John Hunter Hospital.”

The pair have since returned home.

Robinson’s Roosters knocked over the Manly Sea Eagles 26-18 in 2013, the same season he became the youngest-ever recipient of the Dally M Award for Coach of the Year.

The Sydney outfit followed up with back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019, under his reign, at the expense of the Melbourne Storm (21-6) and Canberra Raiders (14-8) respectively.

Robinson has a strong connection with the region.

He’s not only a close friend of the Newcastle Knights’ Adam O’Brien, he’s joined forces with Mark Hughes on several occasions to raise funds for the Hunter-based foundation.
