The UEFA Nations League kicked off on Thursday 5th September with some headline fixtures which turned out to have bitter sweet results for the teams involved.
Among the headline fixtures, was Portugal against Croatia, Serbia against Spain, Denmark against Switzerland and Scotland vs Poland.
Cristiano Ronaldo got his 900th goal as he stated earlier in his YouTube show with Rio Ferdinand.
Portugal saw out Croatia 2-1, making a good start to the Nations League group stage with a win although they were forced into a defensive error that cost them a clean sheet. Manchester United's Diogo Dalot scored Portugal's first and also an own goal.
Denmark took advantage of Switzerland's red card and scored first after Nico Elvedi was sent off with a straight red card after foul play.
Granit Xhaka was also sent off after receiving two yellow cards and Denmark capitalized again and scored their second.
The European champions Spain were held to a sour drawn against Serbia who pulled off a brave performance by keeping the Spaniards at bay despite being flooded with talent.
Robert Lewandowski, Sebastian Szymanski and Nicola Zalewski all scored for Poland. Scot McTominay could have had his brace had his first goal not been ruled out by VAR for a handball offence. Billy Gilmour scored their second goal.
In league C, Alexander Isak scored a brace for his country Sweden beating Azerbaijan 3-1. Viktor Gyokeres scored the third after providing two assist for Isak.
On Thursday, the likes of Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Kevin de Bruyne will be in action. Norway will be facing Kazakhstan, Belgium will be facing Israel while France will battle Italy in a European giant affair.
