Dustin Poirier gave Islam Makhachev an excellent fight—officially, it was Fight of the Night—but the UFC lightweight champion still won in the end.

Following an ingenious ankle pick/leg whip to secure a takedown, Makhachev transitioned from a guillotine to a D'arce choke to force Poirier to submit.

Poirier admitted fading unconscious seconds after he tapped. Poirier had his moments in the fight and was seemingly coming on in the fourth and fifth frames.

He landed an elbow on Makhachev's forehead that opened a nasty gash. However, Makhachev's capable striking and relentless grappling proved to be the difference in each round and the finish.

After the fight, Makhachev expressed a desire to move up to welterweight to win a title in his second division. Leon Edwards is the current champion at 170 pounds, but he is defending his title against Belal Muhammad on July 27 at UFC 304 in Manchester, England.

Makhachev could move right into a title opportunity against the winner in the year's fourth quarter. Poirier talked about potentially retiring after this fight–win or lose. He reiterated his thoughts of calling it quits during his post-fight interview with Joe Rogan.

Poirier wouldn't confirm his decision, but if he is done competing as a professional mixed martial artist, his next stop is the UFC Hall of Fame.

Here is a look at the bonus winners from UFC 302.
