Thompson downed No.30 seed Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (5) to book his spot in the round of 16.

Then De Minaur rolled over an injured Dan Evans in four sets, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 6-0.

De Minaur broke Evans twice in the first set, but it was the Brit who found a break late in the second to give himself a chance.

But down 4-5, the 'Demon' broke straight back, and then held serve to force Evans to hold to force a tiebreaker, which he did.

Evans eventually won the tiebreak to level the scores.

Evans took a medical timeout between the second and third sets, and was clearly hampered from then on.

"The first thing we should show is a lot of respect to Dan - he's a ultimate competitor," De Minaur said in his post-match courtside interview.

"He could have easily pulled out, the body was obviously not feeling well, but he stayed out there and tried his best. I really appreciate it."

It's the first time De Minaur had got the better of the Brit.

"We've had some great battles he's gotten the, the better of me here on many occasions. So, I'm happy I was able to get one on the board," De Minaur said.

De Minaur is the first Aussie to reach the fourth round in all four slams in a calendar year since his mentor Lleyton Hewitt in 2004.

"I'm super proud of what I've been able to achieve this year. It's been tough coming back from injury. But I'm so happy to be back here in New York playing these kinds of matches ... let's go, let's keep it going."

Earlier, Thompson won the first two sets comfortably, but was forced to work for it in the third, winning in a tiebreak.

Thompson twice came back from a mini-break down in the tiebreak and got to match point off an Arnaldi error.

Arnaldi then gifted the Aussie the victory with a double fault.

De Minaur and Thompson join Alexei Popyrin in the fourth round. Unfortunately, the De Minaur and Thompson will face each other in the fourth round, while Popyrin will do battle with home hero Frances Tiafoe.

"It's so good for Australian tennis to show what we're capable of," De Minaur said.

"Alexi put on a show last night beating Novak, (he's) playing some incredible tennis. It's a pity that, that we gotta play each other."

De Minaur pointed out all three men were born in Sydney.

"So there's something special out there."

Fortunately Popyrin is on the other side of the draw, meaning there won't be another all-Aussie clash until the final.
