Australian star Vanessa Low retained her Paralympic title in style setting a new world record in the women's long jump T61 at the Stade de France on Thursday evening (5 September).

Low leapt to 5.45m for a record show on day seven of Para athletics competition that witnessed 19 gold Paralympic champions including Games records. This was Low's first medal at Paris 2024 Paralympic Games and second in the event.

“When I went to bed last night I had a feeling I was going to open up big. I focussed on what needed to be done," said the two-time world champion Low.

"Starting the jump with a smile, that was the key. Anything done in a happy mindset is done better. Before the first jump, the pressure just fell off. This is where I’m meant to be. I just felt at home.”

Season best for Athanasios

Greece's Ghavelas Athanasios too defended his Paralympic gold with a season's best 11.02 in men's 100m T11 final.

“I feel amazing. It was a great race. I’ve worked so hard and we got the gold. I’m really happy for that. Thank you God, my family, my guide, my friends,” said Athanasios, who is the Paris 2023 World champion.

Meanwhile, Catherine Debrunner won her fourth gold medal at Paris 2024 with a Games record time of 51.60 in women's 400m T53 final.

"If someone had told me before the Games that I would leave here with four golds I would never have believed them," said Debrunner.

“There are so many good athletes here every day, I never thought I could win four of my five races.”

Cuban legend Omara Durand won her 10th Paralympic gold medal as she raced to victory in the women’s 100m T12 at Stade de France on Thursday. Durand clocked 11.81 seconds to win her second gold at Paris 2024.

Earlier, China's Wen Xiaoyan accomplished her misson as she clinched her third gold in the women’s 100m T37 on Thursday morning.

Xiaoyan's Qing Wu too won her first women's shot put - F33 gold with a Games record throw of 7.98 metres. Wu has two world titles in shot put F36 finals.
