In a stunning turn of events, India's Vinesh Phogat triumphed over Olympic and four-time world champion Yui Susaki in the women's freestyle 50kg round of 16 at the Paris Olympics. Phogat, a 29-year-old wrestler from Haryana, has experienced a tumultuous journey leading up to this moment. In 2023, she faced numerous challenges, including protesting against the national wrestling federation chief, enduring harsh conditions on New Delhi's pavements for 40 days, confrontations with the police, and undergoing knee surgery. Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik, and several other well-known wrestlers gathered at New Delhi's Jantar Mantar on January 18 to protest against the then WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Despite these obstacles, Phogat's determination never wavered as she successfully navigated the rigorous Olympic qualification process.
