Why iconic pre-Grand Final tradition won't go ahead in 2024
One of the most anticipated events on AFL Grand Final day is Fox Footy’s Longest Kick competition.
First run in 2015, North Melbourne great Drew Petrie outkicked the likes of Travis Cloke, Taylor Walker and 400-game champion Dustin Fletcher to take out the maiden trophy.
The competition’s longest-ever kick to date came one year later from the boot of former Blue and Crow Bryce Gibbs, launching a 72.3 metre missile into orbit.

From the game’s biggest superstars like Charlie Curnow, to retired larrikin Brendan Fevola, to amateur footballers with a cannon for a kick - the event has had everything in its eight renditions to date.
But where is it in 2024?
Unfortunately, construction works began surrounding the Yarra River this past April on the Greenline Project, attempting to revitalise the area.
As these works will not be complete until at least the end of 2024, the Longest Kick cannot take place as usual. But Fox Footy’s Grand Final coverage will still get underway at 9am with the best pre-game analysis of the Swans vs Lions decider!
