A man has been charged with the murder of a 15-year-old boy whose body was found on the side of a road in Sydney's south-west on Friday night.

Officers were called to bushland off Wilton Park Road, Wilton, about 7.25am on Saturday, after the body of the boy was found by a passer-by.

Police say the teenager was a local from nearby Picton.

On Saturday afternoon, following a public appeal for information, a 32-year-old man walked into Narellan Police Station where he was arrested. 

He has now been charged with murder.

The man was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

Detectives will allege in court the man stabbed the teen during a physical altercation.

A crime scene was set up as police canvassed the local area, including service stations.

Earlier on Saturday, NSW Police Acting Superintendent Tim Calman said they were trying to work out the timeline of events.

"Information that we have at this stage is that there may have been a group that were camping in that area, and we believe that persons associated with that camping event may have been involved," Superintendent Calman said.

"We believe something has happened on the Friday evening, but the exact time in relation to what has actually happened is still under investigation."
