Collingwood vs Brisbane

Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions will clash on Friday night in a top-of-the-table battle that could define the latter’s top-two hopes.

The Pies (17-4, 126.7%) got back on the winners list last week after back-to-back losses, but will be without key trio Darcy Moore, Nick Daicos and Jordan De Goey due to injury.

The Lions (15-6, 123.2%) could virtually seal a top-two finish with a win and have shown good form at Marvel Stadium and against the Pies, winning their last five matches against the side.

QUARTER-BY-QUARTER MATCH REPORT

There were no late changes, with Mason Cox (Collingwood) and Jarryd Lyons (Brisbane) named the starting subs.

Brisbane got off to a fast start, with Callum Ah Chee kicking a goal in the first minute of the game.

The Magpies steadied after the opening minutes, but couldn’t capitalise on their attacking chains of play and forward 50 entries.

Joe Daniher made them pay at the other end, marking inside 50 and kicking his side’s second of the night.

“That looked confident,” Channel 7 caller Matthew Richardson said of Daniher. “You miss your first one it just builds, so that’s good for Joe.”

John Noble kicked the Magpies’ first after a brilliant spin move through a defender inside 50 before Josh Daicos added another soon after to draw scores level at 13 apiece.

From there the Pies had really turned the tables, with Jack Ginnivan making it three goals in a row after nailing a set shot from 40 metres out.

“Collingwood’s tackle pressure is really good,” Richardson noted.

The accurate Lions responded though with two of the next three goals including Ah Chee converting finish on the run, while Cam Rayner added another to make it 10 majors in total between both sides in a hot start.

The Lions took a 12-point lead into the first break, 6.2 (38) to 4.2 (26).

Brisbane got off to the ideal start in the second term, with Charlie Cameron taking an athletic marking and kicking his second goal.

Things got slightly tense in the second term after Brayden Maynard ripped off Deven Robertson’s jumper in a contest.

Soon after, in a bizarre moment, Robertson threw away the remains of his jumper after getting pinged for holding the ball.

“The jumper is gone, look at this! We’ve got a top-end nude out there in Robertson,” Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor said.

It took some time for the Lions to get Robertson a new guernsey, with Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge saying: “Don’t worry about the GPS, just give him the jumper.”

Both Pies debutant Jakob Ryan and Ah Chee landed awkwardly in marking contests in a short sequence and came from the ground, with the former eventually subbed off for Cox. due to concussion.

Rayner and Jamie Elliott both put through goals for their respective sides amid a frantic period in the match.

“A lot happening in this game in a short two or three minute period, it feels the whole vibe of it’s changed slightly,” Taylor noted.

The Lions led by 16 points at half-time, 9.3 (57) to 6.5 (41).

The Lions bursted out of the gates in the second half with the opening two goals – first a long-range bomb from Eric Hipwood followed by Cameron darting through traffic and finishing masterfully – without even looking at the goals.

Brisbane opened up a game-high 28-point lead, and just when it looked like the visitors might run away with it, Collingwood hit back with the next two goals and it was game on again.

Through dominance in the middle of the ground led by Mason Cox’s ruckwork, the Magpies stacked on two more goals, and within the blank of an eye, it was just a four-point game.

“What about Cox out of the middle? He’s showing some real spirit and fight?” Taylor posed.

Richardson added: You asked the question, is he playing for his spot in the team going into finals. He couldn’t be doing any better than he’s doing at the moment in the centre bounce.”

Hodge noted: “If he keeps doing this, he’s got a spot next week and the first final, if he’s that convincing.”

Brisbane wrestled back momentum though with two more goals including a finish from distance by Lincoln McCarthy to continue his side’s efficiency.

In a worrying sight for the Pies, Nathan Murphy landed horribly in a marking contest and came from the ground groggy while in the hands of trainers.

“He’s in all sorts, that’s not great,” Hodge said. “We spoke earlier about how important he’s been to Collingwood this year.”

Beau McCreery might be cited for a dangerous tackle on Darcy Wilmot where he pinned the young Lion’s arms and slammed him into the turf.

“This could be trouble for McCreery,” Taylor noted.

Brisbane held a 12-point lead at three-quarter time, 14.7 (91) to 12.7 (79).
