Matt Shirvington received a special delivery from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Tuesday.

The Sunrise host was teased with a package from Channel 7’s mailroom early in the broadcast, and appeared to be under the impression it was an invitation to the prime minister’s upcoming wedding to partner Jodie Haydon.

But instead, Shirvington was surprised with a four-pack of beer following his bet against the prime minister over the result of the Manly Sea Eagles-Rabbitohs NRL match on Sunday.

The wager came while Shirvo was speaking to Albanese last week.

“Prime Minister, just before we let you go, your beloved Rabbitohs are playing in Vegas this weekend. Up against my beloved Sea Eagles. Happy to have a personal wager on the game?” he asked.

Albanese agreed.

“How about a six-pack, Shirvo? That doesn’t break any (parliamentary gift) rules!” he replied.

Albanese sent the Sunrise star a four-pack of Willie the Boatman Albo Pale Ale.

Shirvo was left shocked after the delivery, reading out the note.

“A bet’s a bet, Shirvo — enjoy the Albo ale,” the note, on official stationary from the Prime Minister’s Office, read.

Shirvo said he initially thought it was a wedding invite.

“I went a bit early and thought it might be an invitation to his wedding. But why would I be invited to the PM’s wedding? His buck’s night? That would have been even better!”

Co-star Mark Beretta then pointed out it was a four-pack of beer, not a six-pack.

“Not going to be finicky, but that’s a four-pack,” Shirvington said.

Co-host Nat Barr then proved her sense of humour.

“Cost-of-living crisis,” Barr shot back.
