She appeared alongside Mr Albanese and his son Nathan to celebrate Labor’s election victory.

Mr Albanese split from his former wife, the retired NSW Labor politician Carmel Tebbutt, in 2019.

Ms Haydon works in the superannuation sector. She was born to school teacher parents in Bankstown, Sydney, but grew up on the Central Coast.

In an interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly in 2022, Mr Albanese revealed the couple met when he was speaking at a public event. Ms Haydon yelled out “Up the Rabbitohs”, and introduced herself to the then-opposition leader.

The pair had an early date at the Young Henry’s brewery in Sydney’s inner west.

Ms Haydon has previously described her intention to focus on her job, allowing Mr Albanese to do the same as prime minister. She is the chief patron of the National Portrait Gallery, a role traditionally held by the spouse of the prime minister.

“He had a public profile and I didn’t, so I knew that we both followed the same footy team, we both had a love for the inner west and I think I said in that direct message ‘hey, we’re both single’,” she told News Corp,

Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil were among Labor colleagues quick to congratulate Mr Albanese and Ms Haydon.

“Love is a beautiful thing. I’m so happy for you both,” Senator Wong wrote.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton congratulated Mr Albanese on the floor of parliament on Thursday morning.

“Jodie’s a lovely person, so I wish them every happiness,” he told radio 2GB.

“It’s obviously a special relationship that they’ve got, and I wish them every success.”
