Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will convene national cabinet on Friday to agree to new laws banning Australians under the age of 16 from signing up to social media platforms, setting up an early flashpoint with major Donald Trump ally Elon Musk.
Describing the legislation as “world leading”, Mr Albanese and Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said social media companies would have a year before the rules came in to give them time to work out how to stop children signing up, or face big fines.
