Myall Coast Boxing Mentor To Fight for Charity in Sydney - News Of ...

BOXING mentor and former local policeman Rob Wylie will float like a butterfly, sting like a bee at the NSW Police Boxing Competition, held at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL on Friday, 13 October.

The Police Boxing competition is a one-two punch for charity, with funds raised going to Police Legacy, and the PCYC, with which Rob has had a long and close connection, mentoring kids in the area into better physical fitness.

“I’ve always been involved with boxing, and the kids lately, and competed in many kickboxing bouts before, but this is my first boxing event,” Mr Wylie told NOTA.

The Hawks Nest-Tea Gardens Boxing Club, which meets regularly on Monday and Wednesday nights, is closely associated with Rob’s work at the Taree PCYC, which he does entirely for the kids.

“Rob jumped at the idea of starting boxing here, and, as a coach, I’m proud of the effort he’s putting in,” Phil Wallis, one of the local Club coaches, told NOTA.

“It’s about getting and staying fit, channelling their energies, and setting goals,” Mr Wylie explained, and sometimes the goal is simply a reason to get fit.

Rob has been overwhelmed by the community support he has already received for his Sydney charity match.

“Within three days of posting on Facebook, we’d raised $1300 – the local people and businesses in this town are just great.” Mr Wylie expressed his gratitude.

“Not many people are aware that the PCYC is a charity, it relies heavily on this sort of fundraising.”

The Sydney event has already sold over 700 tickets.

This ‘Friday the Thirteenth’ may be a bad-luck day for his competitor, Dave Roptell, Superintendent Commander at Tweed-Byron, since Senior Constable Wylie will be able to live out everyone’s fantasy of legally hitting a superior.
