Carlton vs Melbourne
AFL Thursday scoreboardEarly goals exchanged the third

Carlton has extended its lead back out to 37 points again after goals to Owies and Curnow.

Melbourne got one of their own via Kozzie Pickett, but they've not ben able to stem Carlton's scoring at all.

Every time the Blues go inside 50, they look like scoring.

Key Event

HT: Late goal gives Melbourne a glimmer of hope

Carlton heads to the main break with a 31-point lead and they're still well in control of this one.

Melbourne well below their best so far tonight, and a late goal from Daniel Turner gives them some hope going into the sheds.

As impressed as he was with that first quarter, Michael Voss would've been equally impressed by the way his team answered Melbourne's challenge in the second term.

Still lots of work to do, but the Blues are looking the goods so far!

Owies doubles up to extend Carlton's lead

There's the customary Matthew Owies celebration!

The Blues goalsneak was subdued by his own standards after his first goal, but he gets the crowd up and about with a classic rev-up after his second.

Like Petracca did earlier in the quarter, Cripps causing some havoc while he rests up forward.

This time he takes a mark at centre half forward and finds a leading Owies with a terrific short kick.

Owies makes no mistake on the set shot. Carlton's lead a game-high 37 points now.

Cripps puts Carlton back in control

It's captain fantastic on the board for the Blues, and that's gonna hurt Melbourne!

The Demons have had the better of the play in this quarter, but they've been so wasteful with their inside 50s.

A deep kick inside 50 from Ollie Hollands, and the Demons allow it to get out the back and Cripps crumbs to perfection.

Blues back out to a five-goal lead.

Petracca with two in a row for Melbourne

Christian Petracca is single-handedly bringing his team to life!

Melbourne's No.5 with another mark inside 50, this time on a lead, and he makes no mistake on a tricky set shot.

He's changed this game since going forward in the second quarter.

You sense the momentum has just slightly shifted in this game now.

Blues wouldn't mind a steadier.

Key Event

Petracca stems the bleeding for Melbourne

Melbourne finally has its first goal of the night, and it comes from Christian Petracca!

Finally the Demons get a mark inside 50 following a turnover in the middle of the ground from a centre bounce which Carlton initially won.

Petracca ghosts in in between two defenders to take a mark 30m out directly in front. He makes no mistake on the set shot.

Owies on the board as Dees pay for turnover

Is that game over already?

A horrible turnover in the middle of the ground from Judd McVee, and the ball ends up in Charlie Curnow's hands.

Curnow with a brilliant central kick inside 50 and he finds Matthew Owies.

Owies drills the set shot to give the Blues a 36-point lead.

Melbourne burned by turnovers in second term

Melbourne pressing to reverse this lead, but they're struggling with their ball movement at the moment.

They've had more of the footy in the first five minutes of this quarter, but they've just bombed away inside 50, and the Blues defence is gobbling it up.

Jacob Weitering with two intercept marks in two minutes.

Melbourne's forward structure just non-existent at the moment.

Walsh ripping Demons to shreds so far

Atop of Simon Goodwin's to-do list will be to get a handle on Sam Walsh.

The Carlton superstar has absolutely dominated this first quarter, and had the first goal of the night as a nice cherry on top.

Walsh has 13 disposals, two clearances and four tackles to go along with that early goal.

Key Event

QT: Blues with massive break as forwards strike

Michael Voss couldn't have dreamt of a better quarter!

The Blues go into the first change with a 30-0 lead after kicking five straight goals, and the Demons have been absolutely listless.

Carlton's vaunted big forward line having its way at the moment, and Charlie Curnow hasn't even hit the scoreboard yet.

Goals to Walsh, Martin, McKay, Pittonet and Tom De Koning.

Tons of work to do for the Demons. It's the first time they've been held scoreless in a first quarter since Round 19, 2008 against Geelong, a match where they ended up losing by 116 points.

Incredibly the Demons lead the inside 50 count 13-11, but Carlton has taken four marks inside 50 to the Dees' zero.

Key Event

McKay on the scoreboard as the rain comes

Melbourne in big, big trouble here at the MCG!

The Blues have been excellent and after being quiet for the first 15 minutes of the match, Harry McKay gets in on the act.

A quick kick inside 50 finds the leading McKay, and he's not put off by the conditions at all as he drills a 45m set shot.

Blues out to a 24-point lead, and you've got to say it's well-deserved. Melbourne hasn't looked like scoring to be honest.

Three straight for the Blues!

Carlton all over Melbourne here in the first 10 minutes!

Jack Martin takes a towering mark on the tip of the goalsquare and drills the set shot and he's pumped up.

The Blues have the first three goals of the game and they've almost doubled up the Demons in the disposal count, currently leading it 43-25.

Pittonet consolidates Carlton's fast start

It's a really good start by Carlton this!

Max Gawn gives away a free kick in a ruck contest in Carlton's forward 50, and Marc Pittonet makes no mistake on a set shot from 45m out.

The Baggers are up and about early on.

Key Event

Sam Walsh gets Blues on the board

Sam Walsh snaps one through for Carlton, and why wouldn't he with the season he is having!

Terrific transition footy from the Blues this time, and Durdin and Pittonet combined with Pittonet eventually finding Walsh.

Both teams are moving the ball at a rate of knots, giving defences fits at the moment.

End-to-end footy early on

What a blistering start it's been in this one!

Tom De Koning looked sure to take a mark deep in Carlton's 50, only for a late spoil from Judd McVee.

The Demons rebounded the ball brilliantly after a chain of handballs between Petracca and Chandler on the defensive 50, but Carlton's defence holds up strong.

Play underway at the MCG

We're up and away at the MCG!

Kozzie Pickett lining up in the centre square alongside Jack Viney, Christian Petracca and Max Gawn.

Key Event

Voss explains shock Hewett move

When asked why George Hewett is named as his sub, Carlton coach Michael Voss says he wants to share the load around in his midfield tonight.

It's a big call because you'd think a guy like Hewett would be perfectly suited to these wet weather conditions.

Teams out on the ground

We're just over 10 minutes from the first bounce here at the MCG!

Melbourne and Carlton running through the banner as we speak.

There's a bit of rain about, so it's sure to be slippery underfoot.

Which team adjusts to the conditions best?

Poor history for Curnow against Demons

Charlie Curnow has been kicking goals for fun over the last few years, but he hasn't been able to get a hold of the Demons.

Curnow has just seven goals in six career appearances against Melbourne.

The Demons are statistically their worst opponent, and it's not close.

Harry McKay has fared a little better, kicking 10 goals in five appearances against Melbourne, but he's yet to play in a win against the Demons.
