Labor member for Barwon South Darren Cheeseman has agreed to resign from his role as parliamentary secretary for education.

Premier Jacinta Allan has revealed she sought Mr Cheeseman's resignation "as a result of allegations of persistent, inappropriate behaviour in the workplace towards staff".

The former federal MP will remain a member of the Victorian parliament and a member of the parliamentary Labor Party.

"Under the Ministerial Code of Conduct, ministers and parliamentary secretaries are expected to behave according to the highest standards of personal conduct in the performance of their duties and to behave in a way that upholds community expectations," Ms Allan said.

She said ministers and parliamentary secretaries must maintain respectful and appropriate working relationships with all staff and colleagues.

"The wellbeing of staff and their right to a respectful workplace is not negotiable."

Mr Cheeseman was elected into the Victorian parliament in 2018 after holding the federal seat of Corangamite for Labor from 2007 to 2013.

The ABC has contacted Mr Cheeseman for comment.
