The momentum of the car ultimately saw him slam into the barrier before the jolt threw his Mercedes back out onto the track.

He was left on two wheels with the bottom of his car facing into oncoming traffic with the 26-year-old left hanging in his seat.

With his car sitting stranded in the middle of the track, race control issued a virtual safety car as his fellow drivers slowly made their way past the wrecked Mercedes.

Shortly after the race, however, Russell’s radio message to the team was uploaded to social media with fans left horrified that his calls for a red flag went unanswered.

Vision from just behind Russell’s head shows him scrambling to find the radio button on his steering wheel before he pleads with the team.

“Red flag red flag red flag I’m in the middle of the track,” he says.

“Red flag red flag … red red red red red. I’m in the middle. F***ing hell.”

The terrifying footage and audio quickly whipped around social media with fans stunned the FIA didn’t instantly bring out a red flag and stop the race.

F1 troll wrote: “Why they didn’t put a red flag? This was so dangerous.”

Another user added: “The fear in his voice … I don’t understand how this wasn’t considered a red flag?! it doesn’t matter if it was the last lap this is so incredibly dangerous.”

A third wrote: “Him BEGGING for a red flag and race control throwing out the virtual safety car is insane! I’m so glad nothing serious happened here.”

A four added: “This is terrifying to listen to holy s**t the fact that the fia DIDNT red flag it immediately is sick.”

Another wrote: “I don’t think I’ve ever heard a driver beg for a red flag like this before. This is scary and you can hear it in his voice. Unacceptable.”

Thankfully Russell was able to walk away from the incident and spoke to Sky Sports after the race about the last lap incident.

“My take is I’ve gone off and that’s on me. I was half a second behind Fernando 100 metres before the corner then suddenly he came towards me extremely quick and I was right on his gearbox. I don’t know if he had a problem or not,” he said.

“He’s off to the stewards and that’s a bit bizarre in a circumstance like this. I’ve got nothing more to say right now. I need to see everything, just disappointed to end the race like that.

“It’s clear he braked 100 metres before the corner and was back on the throttle again and took the corner normally. We’ve already seen the data of that.”

Russell was pressed further if he believed the Aston Martin driver had in fact brake tested him on the last lap.

“I’m not going to accuse him of anything until we see further. I was right behind him for many, many laps. I was half a second behind him before the corner,” Russell said.

“Then, suddenly he slowed up dramatically and got back on the power. I wasn’t expecting it and he caught me by surprise. That part is on me. It’s interesting he’s been called by the stewards. I’m intrigued as to what they have to say.”

Alonso told media he was struggling towards the end of the race and said he was glad Russell had walked away unscathed.

“I had some issues for the last 15 laps or something on the battery, on the deployment, so definitely I was struggling a little bit at the end of the race but I cannot focus on the car behind,” he said.

“But he’s OK, apparently. I saw the car and I was very worried.”
