Kellie Finlayson, wife of AFL star Jeremy, has shared an update on her battle with terminal cancer following a ‘crazy’ discovery in new scans.

The mother-of-one had already beaten cancer once when she was 25 and had recently given birth to daughter Sophia before it returned in January this year and had spread to her lungs.

She is currently undergoing another round of chemotherapy - and a recent restaging scan has offered hope.

Signs are there that her long-term prognosis could soon be revised.

“After all the chemotherapy I had, they did a CAT scan ... all the scans and they came back with no activity,” the 27-year-old told News Corp.

“What that means is that if there is cancer in there, it’s dormant, which means it’s not spreading, which is obviously fantastic.

“If it means that I‘m here to see my daughter go to school for the first day or go to her 21st, that’s not something I thought I’d have three months ago.”

More chemotherapy - “out of fear of relapsing,” she said on SAFM - and a radiation treatment are on the horizon.

Another round of scans afterwards will provide an even stronger look at Kellie’s prognosis, and she “could technically be cancer free” in three months’ time.

Kellie, alarmed by misleading headlines in the wake of her update, confirmed she remains terminal with Stage 4 colorectal cancer right now.

“As happy as I am that my results are showing such a positive response to the chemotherapy ... I am not cancer free - I f***ing wish lol,” she wrote on Instagram.

“The response has been so overwhelming and I’m so grateful I’m having such an incredible impact with the way I’ve been able to share my story.”

Kellie has previously spoken of seeking out a second opinion and finding a new oncologist who put her on a lower dose but a more aggressive chemotherapy.

But she says the latest results have still surprised.

“Obviously with the prognosis that I had, we didn’t think that would happen,” Kellie said.

“My oncologist rang me … he’s like, this is crazy … he was shocked - I’m really lucky.”

Kellie, who regularly attends Jeremy’s AFL games for Port Adelaide, last month opened up on rushing to write a bucket list but anxieties around their daughter’s future and Jeremy’s wellbeing followed.

“Do I have five years? Less? More? How soon is Jeremy going to be a single parent?” Kellie recalled.

“If I were to pass, I would hope that he would find someone to help him raise our child eventually.

“But I was just thinking about Jeremy trying to be a mum and a dad with his career being the sole income for our family.

“And the anxiety around not knowing how Sophia was going to be brought up knowing her dad would’ve been ruined to a degree as well.”

Sophia, who turns two in August, understands her mother’s illness in simple terms.

“She knows mummy’s sick, but she doesn’t know what’s really going on. She knows that I’ve got ‘owes’,” Kellie said.

“When I get connected to my chemotherapy, I bring a bottle of chemo home for a slow release for 46 hours, so I’m actually attached to a chemotherapy bag through my port in my chest.

“She knows when she sees the band aids that mummy’s got ‘owes’, so a couple of days after (that) I get it off.

“She’ll check my chest every day - ‘does mummy have owes?’ She knows I’m sick, but she doesn’t really understand what it is.”
