'I'm not sure about that': Warriors dudded by 'dubious' call

The Warriors were on the wrong end of what Fox League expert Michael Ennis described as a “dubious” obstruction call in their game against the Melbourne Storm on Saturday night.

Having already had a try to Marcelo Montoya taken off the board minutes earlier, the Warriors came to rue another contentious decision as Jackson Ford was ruled to have taken out Jahrome Hughes in a crucial point late in the first half.

The Warriors were in scoring territory but instead were penalised against the run of play for the obstruction, which the visitors immediately challenged convinced it was a defensive decision from Hughes.

Both Ennis and Warren Smith, who were in commentary for Fox League, agreed with that assessment.

“I’m not sure about that,” Ennis said as the Bunker ruled in favour of the on-field ruling.

“If you look at Jahrome Hughes’ movements as Johnson sinks into the line, he comes towards Jackson Ford.”

“Hughes follows forward in at least two steps,” added Smith.

“That would be a very, very tough interpretation by the Bunker and on-field officials.”

While the NRL has taken a very black-and-white approach to obstruction rulings in recent years, Hughes did appear to take a few steps towards Ford, essentially giving the Warriors forward little chance of avoiding a collision.
