QT: Demons hold Hawks goalless and lead by 32

If I'm Sam Mitchell, I'm ripping up the gameplan and starting over from scratch. Their slow, sideways ball movement played right into Melbourne's hands, who were able to score with ease in transition and from stoppages, which they are dominating.

The Demons seem aggrieved by the work Hawthorn are putting into Clayton Oliver, and that's only inspiring them to crack in harder. Melbourne are up for this contest and seemed to relish rubbing the Hawks' noses in it during that quarter.

There's a long way to go, and I can tell you for a fact that the Hawks are capable of more than this. Can't leave it much longer to prove it though.

Fritsch adds another, it's a disaster of a start for the Hawks

The Hawks are second to every ball and are fumbling when they do get there first. That was a shambolic goal, started by a Ward fumble in the goalsquare, continued by a free kick and finished by a belated advantage call allowing Fritsch to goal from five metres out.

It's only very early days, and we've seen some big swings already this season. But yeesh. This isn't looking good for the brown and gold.

Judd McVee makes it four straight! Hawks all over the shop

Hawthorn's attacking tactics aren't working, and they seem preoccupied with trying to put physical pressure on Clayton Oliver. The Demons won the clearance through Oliver, who was laid out by Newcombe after he dished off the handball.

The free kick was paid, but it didn't matter. McVee streamed into the open goal to kick another for Melbourne.

Pickett has another, and the Dees make the hesitant Hawks pay

And that's what happens when Hawthorn inevitably turn it over. Space galore for Melbourne's creative players, and it ends up in the hands of Pickett at the top of the 50. One big long bomb later, the Dees have three.

Slow going for Hawthorn

So the Hawks have come here with a plan. They are going to possess the ball, methodically work their way forward and avoid aimlessly bombing the ball to May and Lever.

But all that's really happening is Hawthorn very slowly chipping the ball side to side, backwards again, then slowly side to side once more without ever threatening the Demons defence.

They've taken an incredible 46 marks already. It's very deliberate, but it ain't working right now.

It falls in Fritsch's lap! Demons have two

A big pack convened at the top of the goalsquare, but it evaded all the big boys and fell onto the chest of Bayley Fritsch.

He finishes off the work with a goal. Bright start from the Demons.

Safe to say Finn Maginness is tagging Clayton Oliver

Oliver just had to leave the field with some blood on his knee, and Maginness followed him all the way to the bench.

That's a proper tag.

Star pair Luke Jackson and Andrew Brayshaw have sparked a dramatic turnaround as Fremantle extended their winning start to the AFL season with a 26-point victory over North Melbourne.

Trailing by 33 points midway through the second term, the Dockers rattled off nine consecutive goals in a spirited fightback and held firm late in the match to clinch a 15.12 (102) to 11.10 (76) victory at Docklands on Saturday.

Fremantle have consecutive wins to open a campaign for the first time since 2015, when they claimed the minor premiership.

North have two losses ahead of their Good Friday feature match against Carlton.

Jackson (24 disposals, seven clearances, two goals) and Brayshaw (27, four, one) breathed life into the Dockers when they desperately needed it before halftime.

They were also important contributors after the main break, as Fremantle kicked the first seven goals in a third-quarter onslaught to take a stranglehold on the contest.

Caleb Serong (35 disposals, eight clearances), Jordan Clark (28 touches) and Hayden Young (21) all played significant roles, while Matt Taberner and Michael Frederick (two each) joined Jackson in kicking multiple goals.

Former captain Nat Fyfe (19 disposals, one goal) was also influential before he was substituted out of the game at three-quarter time.

North midfielders Luke Davies-Uniacke (30 disposals, nine clearances) and Tom Powell (28, eight) had a big say in their side's early dominance but were overwhelmed by Fremantle's spread of contributors.

Harry Sheezel was busy with 35 disposals for North, while Powell, Paul Curtis and Cameron Zurhaar finished with two goals each.

Kozzy Pickett gets the game's opening goal

A bit of ground level chaos inside 50 for the Demons, and it was Amon's errant handball that presented Pickett with the simplest of opportunities at the top of the goalsquare.

Demons get some reward for thei good early work.

Demons miss early chances, but a trend is already developing

We've only played a few minutes, but already you can see Hawthorn are going to have a hard time moving the ball through Melbourne from defence today. The Demons set up to defend transition as well as anyone in the league, and the Hawks are trying to be methodical to pick their way through, bringing about early errors.

The Hawks will have to be brave and creative today.

And this bloke has taken his place at centre half back — Hawks captain James Sicily cleared to play this game by the tribunal after being cited for kicking Andy McGrath last week.

G'day! Many thanks to Andrew for steering us through today's opening game. Reckon that'll be a frustrating one to take for North fans. They had that game so well in hand early in the third quarter and were playing geniunely good footy. The Dockers clearly improved, but it was a shame how quickly things fell to bits for the Roos there.

Anywho, quickly over to the MCG we go. Melbourne will be hot favourites for this one against Hawthorn, but the Hawks have made a habit of surprise wins under Sam Mitchell. On a perfect autumn day in Melbourne, let's hope for a good one.

Full-time: Fremantle beats North Melbourne by 26 points

The Kangaroos get a late consolation goal from Bailey Scott, but the four premiership points are going to the Fremantle Dockers.

There were some positives for Alastair Clarkson's men, but that second half is a bit of a worry. 10 goals to three after the long break is not the way they wanted this game to go.

Fremantle's midfield got on top through Serong, Brayshaw, Fyfe and co - and in particular the all-around play of Luke Jackson. If he plays like that most of the time in 2024, Freo are going to be hard to stop.

Dockers 2-0, Kangaroos 0-2. Both teams will be ones to watch for varying reasons as the season continues.

Fremantle hit the 100-point mark

This is a disappointing end to the game for the home side.

They had the ball there and turned it over following a cramp to Colby McKercher, the Dockers jumped on it and went inside 50 again. After a number of shots at it the ball comes out to ex-Sun Jeremy Sharp, who snaps a great goal from the pocket.

Dockers get the vital goal from Bailey Banfield

That was a vital passage of play.

The ball was in the middle, the Kangaroos were under pressure, they tried to get it out but Caleb Serong forced it free, Andrew Brayshaw fed it out to Tom Emmett, who made a wonderful one-handed take.

He ran free, handballed to Jye Amiss, who kicked to the hotspot where Bailey Banfield marked and kicked what might be the sealer.

Dockers are four goals clear.

Big chance missed for North

The Kangaroos are coming, but they have to take their chances.

They broke downfield quickly and kicked inside 50 - Nick Larkey had a clear shot at a mark well within range, but he inexplicably dropped it clean, and Freo find a way to clear.

Tom Powell answers for North Melbourne

Give credit to the Kangaroos, they're not giving up even though the scoreboard is against them.

They go down the right again, the ball comes out to Tom Powell, and the young midfielder roosts one from 50 - it goes through, and we're back to 20 points!

Dockers make Kangaroos pay with goal to Amiss

You could almost see it coming ... the Kangaroos missed their chances, and at the other end the Dockers grab the ball inside 50, as Caleb Serong leaps high to intercept a pass. He feeds it out to Michael Walters, who shows composure and chips it over the top to Jye Amiss, who kicks it from the goalsquare.

The lead is back to 27 points! That is close to game, I reckon.
