Rhea Ripley defeated Nia Jax in her homecoming at WWE Elimination Chamber 2024 in Perth, Australia. In what Michael Cole called Rhea’s “Mania moment before her WrestleMania moment,” Ripley was emotional in front of a partisan crowd. Ripley won with a Riptide following a superplex in an feel-good match that was not without its flaws.

Rhea Ripley marched into her home continent, once again a huge favorite having not lost since May of 2022. Despite Nia Jax being pushed like a monster heel, it was Jax who entered Perth in Optus Stadium, Australia as a massive underdog at +1100. Between Ripley in her home country under a new regime, and an inevitable match against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 40, there was little-to-no chance Ripley was going to lose.

It’s basically the women’s version of the Roman Reigns problem.

Still, Ripley’s aura, combined with the unique Perth crowd, helped create a special big-match feel. One that becomes less unique—but still every bit as special—each time WWE promotes an international Premium Live Event (PLE).

WWE’s ticket sales have been white-hot, if not record-breaking, for recent international events. WWE moved almost 63,000 tickets for 2022’s Clash at the Castle in Principality Stadium, grossing an $8 million live gate as the WWE’s largest European gate ever. The event also brought in £22 million to the Welsh Economy. WWE aired last year’s Elimination Chamber in Montreal on the back of hometown hero Sami Zayn. The PLE also smashed live gate, viewership and merchandise records.

Sometimes, WWE doesn’t even have to worry about live gate records, like when they were paid nearly $2 million by the Puerto Rican tourism board to host WWE Backlash.

“If you have a country you want us to come, call us...we're looking forward to meeting with the governments,” said Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque about WWE’s International events.

But the difference between WWE’s recent international events and WWE Elimination Chamber: Perth, is recent international PLEs saw at least one native lose in their home country—leaving a bad taste in the venue’s mouth. Damian Priest and Zelina Vega were both defeated at WWE Backlash 2023. Drew McIntyre lost to Roman Reigns at Clash in the Castle 2022 and so did Sami Zayn at Elimination Chamber in Montreal.

This year, however, was a celebration of quite possibly the most dominant performer in all of pro wrestling: Rhea Ripley. Roman Reigns’ near-unprecedented world championship reign will almost certainly come to an end at WrestleMania 40, but there may be no end in sight for Ripley. Ripley not only scored another successful world title defense at Elimination Chamber, but she’s likely to walk into WrestleMania 40 as the favorite.

WWE’s next international PLE will be WWE Backlash: France on May 4, 2024. With no French WWE Superstars, Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens could be the de facto natives as French-Canadians themselves. Given the feel-good moment of Rhea winning in her home country, imagine the elation of Zayn dethroned GUNTHER.

In France.
