What happened to Shubman Gill?

Gill retired hurt due to leg cramps and was subsequently replaced by Shreyas Iyer. Gill showcased promising form from the beginning of the innings. Despite initially taking time to settle in, he escalated the intensity after the departure of Rohit Sharma.

Known for his fast hands and the ability to carve out gaps effortlessly, Gill impressed with eight boundaries and three maximums, amassing a commendable score of 79 off 65 deliveries.

When can Shubman Gill come out to bat again?

According to ICC rules under clause 25.4:

25.4.1 A batter may retire at any time during his innings when the ball is dead. The umpires, before allowing play to proceed, shall be informed of the reason for a batter retiring.

25.4.2 If a batter retires because of illness, injury or any other unavoidable cause, that batter is entitled to resume his innings. If for any reason this does not happen, that batter is to be recorded as ‘Retired – not out’.

25.4.3 If a batter retires for any reason other than as in clause 25.4.2, the innings of that batter may be resumed only with the consent of the opposing captain. If for any reason his innings is not resumed, that batter is to be recorded as ‘Retired – out’.

25.4.4 If after retiring a batter resumes his innings, subject to the requirements of clauses 25.4.2 and 25.4.3, it shall be only at the fall of a wicket or the retirement of another batter.

So, Gill can come out to bat once a wicket falls. It has been a hot and humid day in Mumbai and hence he is dehydrated.

One must also remember that he recovered from dengue not even a month back and his body might not be ready yet to face the rigours of 100-over cricket.

As per the Dafabet odds, Gill is one of the favourites to win the Player of the Match gong in this World Cup semifinal. However, Virat Kohli is the hot favourites as things stand. Maybe it will change if Gill does return to bat.
