Craig Goodwin stars in very good win for Socceroos in CanberraBy Vince Rugari

The return of Craig Goodwin and his exquisite left foot has propelled the Socceroos into the next round of World Cup qualifying with a 5-0 victory over Lebanon, confirming his status as one of Australia’s most important players with a virtuoso performance in the nation’s capital.

Goodwin missed last week’s 2-0 win in Sydney due to illness but recovered in time to start on Tuesday night - and he put on an absolute clinic for the sold-out crowd at Canberra’s GIO Stadium, which began when he set up Kusini Yengi’s first international goal in just the second minute with an inch-perfect cross.

He was at it again two minutes into the second half, floating in a free kick that was eventually bundled over for an own goal, credited to Bassel Jradi, after Harry Souttar’s initial header was saved and Jackson Irvine’s follow-up effort helped squeeze the ball over the line.

Just two minutes later came the South Australian’s pièce de résistance - a sweetly-struck shot from the edge of the box with his trusty left boot that whistled into the back of the net with a sense of destiny.

Graham Arnold also sent on two debutants, midfielders Patrick Yazbek and Josh Nisbet, with the former providing the pass for Iredale, who earned his first cap in Sydney five days before, to extend Australia’s lead to four goals in the 68th minute.

The only sour note for Australia was another injury to playmaker Ajdin Hrustic, who was scythed down by Lebanese midfielder Ali Tneich just moments after assisting Goodwin’s goal with a delightful chip over the top. Hrustic waved away a stretcher that was brought onto the field for him before hobbling off with the assistance of two trainers, unable to put pressure on his left foot.

What that goal meant to John Iredale

It was hard for the heart strings not to be tugged a little when John Iredale scored within 90 seconds of coming on in the second half. It was his first international goal in his second cap for the national side.

What did it mean to me?

“It meant the world to me, personally, and to the boys. We set out to score more goals today and we did that. So it’s a great achievement for everybody tonight,” he said, characteristically for a football player in victory.

But the few tears he shed in the moment really did speak volumes.

And on Craig Goodwin, the outright best player on the park tonight, Iredale said: “Yeah, having someone like him in the squad just boosts the quality you know, he’s got an unbelievable left foot and he showed that tonight - and I was happy that I could get the ball in a cross for him as well.”

Full time: Socceroos win 5-0

Well, Australia won easily in the end against Lebanon. Another 5-0.

A great night for the fans in green and gold, who got to see their side stream through into the third round of World Cup qualifiers.

The Socceroos took a 2-0 lead into half-time against Lebanon, a scoreline very much in breaching distance, but two quick fire goals in the second half, followed by Craig Goodwin’s second goal of the evening, gave them a comfortable finish.

And a slew of debutants got their first (sweet) taste of victory.

The Socceroos have now kept nine clean sheets in their last 11 matches, conceding just three goals since October last year.

Goodwin goes again! Australia go 5-0

There’s no one you’d rather put the ball at the feet of tonight than Craig Goodwin.

He scores again to make it a double and make it fifth for Australia.

The Socceroos make two more subs, with Mitch Duke and Gethin Jones replaced by Sammy Silvera and Thomas Deng.

Lebanon searching for first goal

It’s fair to say Australia are looking good to secure the victory, being four goals up at the 79th minute and all that.

In saying that, Lebanon aren’t backing down and are hunting, hard, for their first goal.

There have been a few shaky moments for the Socceroos, which doesn’t put this out of the realm of possibility.

First goal Iredale!

John Iredale had just come on - and with his first touch, scores.

He pumped his first, then looked to well up as the Socceroos all stormed him to congratulate his first goal at international level.

The cross came from Patrick Yazbek who stormed down the left and placed it perfectly for Iredale. Served it up lik a striker’s dream.

And like that, it’s four for Australia. (That’s more like it).

Australia 4 Lebanon 0.
