Storm vs Broncos

The Storm have extended their winning streak to 13 straight against the Broncos who lost Adam Reynolds and copped three sin bins in Melbourne on Thursday night.

Melbourne won it 24-16 against a gutsy Brisbane side who stay on top of the ladder but they’ve now lost 23 of their past 25 games against the Storm.

Brisbane duo Herbie Farnworth and Pat Carrigan were binned either side of halftime with the latter marched for an alleged hip-drop tackle that saw Nelson Asofa-Solomona go off with an ankle injury.

Reynolds left the field on a medicab following an ugly incident in a play that also saw the Broncos awarded a penalty try in the 17th minute.

Storm hooker Harry Grant held back Farnworth in act of scoring and Reynolds appeared to knock himself out while trying to dive on the loose ball to score. However, Brisbane officials later said they were more concerned about him aggravating an existing neck injury rather than concussion.

The Storm scored first through superstar Cameron Munster when Grant fired a pass out of dummyhalf and the No. 6 came screaming onto the ball to crash over under the posts in the 12th minute.

Melbourne looked set to score a second thanks to more Munster brilliance but Reece Walsh made a try-saving tackle on Justin Olam.

“It’s been a frantic start and a fast start,” Mick Ennis said on Fox League.

“Cam Munster is starting to really find his groove. You just have a sense after last week... he doesn’t often put two bad games together.”

The Broncos were awarded the penalty try in the 17th minute and Walsh converted in front.

“He puts his hands on his back and you just can’t do that.” Ennis said.

Walsh set up his 14th try of the season when he threw a beautiful cut-out pass for Jesse Arthars to cross in the corner in the 24th minute/

“No worries, Adam Reynolds off the field and Reece Walsh has come up with some fine tries,” Ennis said.

“Outstanding from Reece Walsh, that’s all class.”

Farnworth was binned in the 38th minute for taking out Reimis Smith as he chased a Jahrome Hughes grubber.

Storm winger Will Warbrick scored in the corner a few plays later to lock up the scores at 10-10 heading into halftime.

In one of rugby league’s more perplexing rules, Grant wasn’t binned for his professional foul because the penalty try was awarded but Farnworth was because the penalty try wasn’t awarded.

And it looked to prove costly when Warbrick crossed for his second in the 44th minute but the Bunker rubbed it out when former Broncos player Xavier Coates was found to be fractionally off-side in his kick chase.

Ezra Mam pulled off an incredible try-saving tackle when he knocked the ball loose from Eliesa Katoa who was destined to score.

“What a save, Reece Walsh in the first half and now Ezra Mam, the desperation from these young Brisbane stars on show tonight,” Ennis said.

Carrigan was furious with referee Todd Smith when he was binned in the 56th minute for his tackle on Asofa-Solomona.

Tries to Justin Olam - with Carrigan off the field - and another from Wabrick in the 75th minute sealed the result.

Storm forward Aaron Pene and Broncos prop Thomas Flegler were binned in the final three minutes for a melee as Cory Paix scored a consolation try.

34TH MINUTE

Melbourne Storm enforcer Nelson Asofa-Solomona was forced off with what appeared to be a rib injury with just under 10 minutes left in the first half. The hulking Kiwi began the contest off the bench but didn’t have to wait too long to enter the fray and made some trademark big runs and hits.

However, he injured himself somehow deep into the first half and was forced off the field.

17TH MINUTE

Broncos star Adam Reynolds required intense medical attention after thumping his forehead against the turf in his attempt to score a try against the Melbourne Storm.

Broncos centre Herbie Farnworth had broken free and grubbered the ball with Storm rake Harry Grant in hot pursuit.

In his attempt to stop Farnworth, Grant bundled the Broncos star over with both left sprawled on the ground.

Reynolds, who had made a strong chase of his own, then dived and tried to ground the ball before it went dead.

But in his efforts of attempting to score a try, Reynolds whacked his head violently against the turf and was knocked out.

Broncos medical staff rushed over to treat Reynolds who lay motionless and face down on the turf.

Reynolds was eventually flipped to his back but was not moving.

Eventually the Broncos halfback was carted off the field on a stretcher in scary scenes for all involved as Cory Paix entered the contest as his replacement.

The incident happened midway through the first half as the Broncos look to snap a 12-game losing streak to the Storm.

Speaking on Fox League’s broadcast, sideline reporter Lara Pitt revealed the club was concerned with Reynolds “losing some feeling in his hands and feet” but provided a pleasing update on his health.

“The club has said there was some concerns around the neck issue on the field around losing some feeling in his hands and feet,” Pitt said.

“The best news is that has returned in the sheds. He’s with the doctors now having the neck assessed, but he’s been playing this season with a bit of a neck issue.”

Broncos coach Kevin Walters will be desperate to maintain his side’s lead at the summit of the NRL ladder given the contest marks his 300th game as a player and coach with the club.

Walters played 241 games for the Broncos and coached 59, with the 2023 season being his third at the helm in Red Hill.

But rewarding Walters in his milestone match will be an arduous task for the Broncos considering they haven’t beaten the Storm since August 2016, when the Broncos jagged a 26-16 win in Melbourne.

In fact, Brisbane have got the better of the Storm just twice in the last 13 years, highlighting the sheer scale of the challenge they will face this evening.

However, the visitors’ stunning form this season will give them plenty of hope against a Melbourne side who have struggled for consistency this season.

The Storm have also made a late change with Tui Kamikamica coming into the starting side at prop as Nelson Asofa-Solomona moves to the bench and Grant Anderson drops out of the 17.
