Officers were called to a vehicle fire in Mount Helena in Perth's East, near the corner of Honey Street and Mill End, around 6:30pm on Friday.

A resident of a quiet residential street in the area has described finding the woman in a stream in front of her home.

The resident, who asked not to be named, said she heard an explosion and terrible screaming.

"There was just a loud kind of noise, a lot of screaming coming down this way," she said.

"I could hear it was a woman's voice, she was screaming for help."

The resident said she rushed outside and found the woman in the stream with burns to most of her body.

Another of her neighbours was on a nearby bridge trying to help.

The woman said she tried to comfort the injured woman.

"She was terrified," the resident said.

"The slightest noise would make her scream and jump.

"Obviously she was in terrible pain."

The resident said she got a hose and helped keep the woman cool until paramedics arrived.

The woman, in her 30s, was airlifted to Fiona Stanley Hospital, while the man was taken there by ambulance.

The hospital has a specialist burns unit.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing, and Midland detectives are asking anyone with information to get in touch.
