Darwin shaken by 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Banda Sea

Darwin has been shaken after an earthquake in the Banda Sea was felt across the Top End region.

The magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred at about 1:30am local time and was felt by at least 500 residents across Darwin and Palmerston, according to reports made to Geoscience Australia.

It was also felt as far as Katherine, 300 kilometres south of Darwin.

The Joint Australian Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no tsumani threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories. 

No reports of damage have been made in Australia or nearby Timor Leste.
